Vlookup frustrations/Reddit excel help

Wanted to post this to excel Reddit page but doesn’t meet community requirements no not sure why so asking here for a solution to the excel problem or the adding to Reddit community problem…

I have frustrations with vlookups when the numbers that act as the reference are the same but the formula still throws back a #N/A. I know you can get around this with the trim function but if the report has multiple vlookups then using a trim function on the reference will then cause other vlookups to throw back an #N/A. I don’t think changing the format or using format painter helps.

Not sure people will understand my issue from the description but there it is anyway…

Try text to column (and set to txt or a number) on the data that you are using for the vlookup and do the same for the data you are looking up. This will automatically trim any white text or leading zeros and should solve your issue.

I don’t think changing the format does anything if that’s your suggestion?

its not formatting you are eliminating white text or leading zeros that is leading to a the error message. It does the same as trim but you need to do on all vlookups using the data.

the other option is to embed an if formula in your tread to trim if condition is meet but that is a lot more work and slower
