    Hi folks

Is it better to sell a car privately or trade it in ? My car at moment is only worth about 6k im looking at trading it in & adding money towards next car, just not sure if i would get a better deal trading it in.

You would get a better deal by selling it but trading in is more convenient

As dealers are selling less and less new cars due to the chip shortage, they are offering low ball trade-in prices to make more profit from each car they sell. If you can sell it privately then do so but it can be very stressful at times having to deal with time wasters and idiots.

Thanks yeah that's true alot of time wasters is right I have been offered 5k at moment will wait and see it it goes ahead , I dont think I would get that much from a dealer though.

Funny enough it is areal apples and oranges situation. Theoretically selling privately and buying for cash will be to your advantage financially. You are doing two deals and depending on your negotiation skills in two different situations. You need to bea confident wheeler dealer type and be prepared to be messed around by non callers, tyrekickers and time wasters.

Trade-in is far simpler but may cost you more.

    Your choice- apples or oranges

    Good luck either way

Why do you get people asking to swap cars ? Obviously something wrong with car .

Is it better to get cash or bank transfer when selling a car ?

Put in the ad "No Swaps" that should weed them out. Sometimes someone will have a car undesireable to them that they need to offload, could be a convertible when they have just been told they are having twins etc etc.

At €6k you might feel uneasy taking that amount off someone and keeping in your home, same with buyer they may not feel safe handing it over. With me if the deal is over €5k I will either deposit in sellers bank account or do a transfer to their account.

Wanting to swap for their car usually means they have no money to spend but want to offload their POS to you. I'd also doubt putting "no swaps" on the advert will weed them out, the same way putting "no time wasters" will weed those out either.

When I bought my last car I went to a few places to get a trade in price. I ended up selling it through usedcarbuyer.ie. I was being offered ~ 6k to trade in but he paid me 8k. No harm in contacting him to see what he would offer for yours. It would depend on what car you have and its mileage though, I told someone else to contact him but he didn't want their car. Also let me keep the car until my new car was ready which was about a week & a half. I didn't even attempt to sell privately as thought it wasn't worth the hassle.
