Bird calling at night?

As I type this at 2am there is a bird that is calling at night. I don't know what type it is and perhaps a bird expert might tell me.

It is a call and not singing or chirping. The bird seems to be large by the sound it makes. It is January and I noticed the same thing last January but never notice at other times of year. From the noise it appears the bird is calling from different trees. But I think the bird is sitting when it is calling. The calling last a few seconds and then there is a period of a few mins of silence. I live on a tree lined suburban road adjacent the sea. That is all I have. Any guess?

Can you describe the call a bit better?

If it's like a screech, it might be a heron.

OK. It is loud. Low pitch. My neighbours do have a pond with fish so perhaps it could be heron but would not describe it as a screech which I presume would be a high pitch sound. Sorry but I can't describe it any better than low pitch. It has stopped now. But will listen closer next time to it to get a better description. Has been calling last few nights.

Some of their calls do sound like a bird, we have foxes near me and one night thought the birds are up early but it was the foxes

Try the BirdNET app which does bird call recognition. I've been using it recently and found it good.

Sounds most like the Common Snipe.

VERY unlikely to be a Snipe. They're a bird of wetlands.

A thought - could it possibly be a male frog, calling? They do make a distinctive, and quite loud, murmuring noise - and at this time of year.
