House Deeds: Storage

    Hi folks, I wonder if someone could advise on this.


    I've luckily been able to pay off my mortgage on a very modest house. I'm based in Dublin. The bank with whom I had the mortgage sent me out the deeds, a large bundle of various documents, which I'm temporarily storing in my living room. I understand that these are very valuable documents, and, as such, should be preserved safely and durably. So I'm wondering what I should do?


    Should I rent space in a vault and store them there? Should I get a solicitor to store them in their offices, e.g. the solicitor who undertook the house-sale/mortgage work? What kind of cost would be involved in either? What's the best practice for me to follow?

    One thing that might mitigate any risk of loss is simply making a digital copy. If deeds ever go missing (and they do all the time, especially when people die) then they have to be reconstructed. A digital copy has no legal value, but it would be very helpful to a solicitor trying to reconstruct title. So before you vault' em... scan 'em.
