Starter problems BMW r850r

my bmw r850r makes a rattling noise when it starts The noise stops when its running. Its very loud. What could it be. I think its the starter but not sure it sound like a very loose exhaust. The next day it was gone.

do you know if the starter uses a solenoid to push the gears into the flywheel like they do on Cars and airheads? might need a bit of TLC. Otherthing is when was the last Valve clearance service? probally not the cause of the issue. But well worth keeping an eye on just incase
