DIY Boiler Controls and the Law

Hi,

Does anyone know if Irish law prohibit home owners from fitting their own boiler controls? Do they have to be approved controls?

This is all I could find online: "By law, only a Registered Gas Installer is permitted to install, service or repair domestic gas appliances "

Nothing about the controls! Reason I ask is that I have a Raspberry PI connected via relay to the back of the existing controller. Getting the boiler serviced and wondering if I'll need to disconnect everything before the plumper gets here.

I'm not RGI so I can't tell you the law but it's my understanding that you can't remove the cover of the boiler for electrical connections & obviously you can't work on the gas line at all.

I do think you can replace an existing control as the electrical connections have already been made by RGI for old control. You don't need to remove boiler cover or do any work on boiler to replace control AFAIK

Would same apply for Oil Boiler? Or is it just that on gas boilers an RGI is required to do any work on the boiler itself.

RGI only covers gas. It's to ensure everything meets safety standards. People often confuse a RGI cert to cover the entire heating system or that the installation meets building regulations. The cert only covers the safety aspect. You can get a cert & have a terrible overall installation, plumbed badly etc. Cert only covers gas safety

Thanks. This is what I suspected too. I haven't touched the boiler itself, just connected two wires into the wall-mounted controller back-plate.
