Hi all , looking for suggestions to DIY polish or wax a 04 Black car, it's in reasonably good neck considering the age, but when it's washed it lacks the shine and depth of colour you would notice when you polish the black shoes!!

There are a few minor scratches on it some are deep and we are aware that there won't be any miracle changes

Took it 2 different places re Valet, outside only as inside is very clean, got very different opinions, the most honest and common sense one said that there wouldn't be any massive change but there would be an improvement cost €100 the other quote was €250 said they would need to have the car for 5 hours

We are strongly considering having a go ourselves as we have a closed shed that we could use, haven't a clue what to buy at the motor factors, like the difference between polish, wax etc, would like to keep it simple😀

Obviously can't tell without pictures but I'd find it hard to believe that there wouldn't be a massive change in the car with the correct process carried out. Did they explain what they'd do for €100 or €250? It will probably need a multi step machine polish to do it correct and the paint protected to maintain the gloss. If you wanted to tackle it yourself by hand then something like Autoglym super resin polish is excellent for getting paint looking good for a short period

Probably not the two best before and after photos - but black will come up very well with a machine polish. Doing it properly is slow, so a very cheap job is highly unlikely to make a major change. Most guys want the car for a day - so I'd imagine 8 hours is the minimum

Doing it by hand might help a bit, but you really want a machine if you're planning on a significant improvement.

Black shows everything! If you're looking for that mirror like shine, you'll probably want someone to polish the car. If there are bonded contaminents on the car, you could try some fallout remover, and claybar it. After that you could polish the car by hand, or try moving straight to waxing the car. Fusso coat seems popular, a small amount goes a long way though. There's also spray ones, like turtle wax spray sealant which is actually pretty good, and you won't have arms like popeye after it.
