Headphones on public transport

Agree. Some people aren't raised well by their parents and don't understand the ethics of not bothering others in public places. I've seen in some country reminders/campaign in public transport to mind other people, but can't recall where it was...

It’s a terrible indictment on society that a transport company has to invest money to drive a campaign to educate people how to behave themselves on public transport….

Was on the bus to Liffey Valley just before Xmas - behind me woman with thick Dublin accent screaming down her phone, in front of me Polish woman loudly talking on the phone - for the full journey

Ah, nice we have this in Dublin too. However, this is on Twitter. Not exactly sure if there are similar announcements on buses and tram with some ads in the bus stops as I was actually having in mind that.

Exactly. And it's even harder to educate someone who doesn't care, need more energy and time to appeal. This is way parents should raise their children educating and explaining. But I can assure not everybody does that. And here you go. When they become teenagers and if they find some rotten friends, they become bad too if parents didn't teach ethics and to see the difference whats good, considerate, and bad, being ignorant...

It's easy to blame this all on kids (and a lot of the culprits are kids alright) but I've seen plenty of adults playing the radio out loud or having a phone call on loudspeaker. I can't fathom at all how these people think this is OK.

Active Noise cancelling headphones are one of the greatest inventions ever for public transport. I highly recommend them. They don’t quiet block out all noise, but they make it far more bearable.

If they aren't raised well and doesn't learn thing in their life, then there is no difference, kid or adult - inconsiderate and ignorant can be any age.

I've seen some parents say their child won't wear headphones and my feelings on that is "so? Give them a colouring book/drawing paper and crayons or something else that doesn't annoy other passengers

Yes it is just terrible parenting. We’ve had this conversation with my little one:

• use your headphones
• no, I don’t like them
• fine no iPad so, here is a colouring book
• 5 minutes later, ok I’ll wear the headphones.

A big reason many don't use public transport is having to endure arseholes like this.

Was in a public toilet recently and someone was in the cubicle having a full blown conversation on the phone. I was washing my hands and they came out still on the phone, usually I dry my hands with the blue roll provided, I took great satisfaction in using the drier this time and deliberately took my time.

That called someone else (what is you) is a selfish person with bad manners. They should keep their conversations for home or at least mind others around. If that's so hard to understand for you, then unfortunately, you should open a book of ethics to refresh (or maybe start from scratch)...

Listening to other people's stupid conversations, whether it was half a phone conversation or two people talking on the bus or in the train carriage was why I invested in a pair of noise cancelling headphones. And don't get me started on the woman who plonked her phone on the train table every morning where it rang and vibrated for at least half an hour with various messages arriving. I reckoned she knew exactly how to put the phone on silent but needed everyone on the train to know how "important" she is😡.

Not everyone has the luxury of keeping their conversations for other times. If you're working in a minimum wage role, your timed bathroom break maybe the only chance you get to catch up with your child minder or child's teacher.

Someones' personal life issues shouldn't affect completely unrelated people's comfort in their own life. What I hear above are the excuses for not being able to manage life properly (daily tasks, routine, time etc.) - it's a lack of discipline.

Depending on situation. If that would be a quick call without screaming on the bus so others can hear everything about your own life or personal issues, than I see no problem someone having a max of 5 mins conversation. Otherwise, yes, a call back should be made for longer conversations. Public transport is not a place with chit chats, especially the loud ones, despite of the fact it's a conversation on the phone or between other fellow passengers. It's a fairly small space and if everyone would be talking loud, it would be very uncomfortable trip home, work, studies etc. Need to respect that.
