Paying customs vat etc.

    Going to try keep this question short, my uncle came over to visit from during Christmas period, got the ferry over with his car planning to go around Ireland a bit. He's getting a new car anyways and we came to the conclusion that I'll take his old car off him. So I have ferry ticket as proof when it came into the republic, but I didn't purchase until couple weeks after. Guess what Im really asking is where do I now go to pay the import duty on it? This has to be done first right and I can not find where I can pay this in my situation. Thanks for any help, if you need more info just let me know happy to help.

    Details here, supposed to make an appointment within 7 days or it arriving in to the state, you can still do it now, there may be some minor fee for not...

    If the car is a diesel pre September 2015 it may not be worth importing as the NOX levy which is added could make it not economical to do so. Have a look at the V5 registration document to see the value for this. Your uncle doesn't need to put your name on the document, he just hands it over to you and he sends export section to the DVLA in Swansea.

    Thanks for that help, it's a petrol car so I think the VRT etc wont be too bad on it.

    The VRT will be higher usually on a petrol due to the higher CO2. Have you checked out the Revenue calculator?

    Yes absolute max NOX on a petrol is €600, only a fraction of cars will get anywhere near this, mostly 3-4 litre or sports cars. The most important docuiment you need is the V5 document, without this registration will be impossible. You should get your uncle to write out a receipt for you for the date he transferred it to you.

    Thanks so much great help, have v5c, checked vrt calculator which including this vat and import duty, still make the car worth it for me. Will get receipt made up between us, so I pay import duty vrt and vat on the same day when I bring the car into be checked or I have got a bit of time to pay this?

    You have to pay it there and then, you will not get the registration number until you do.

    The info you’ve been given isn’t quite correct. You don’t pay customs duty at the VRT appointment. You only pay VRT at the appointment. You have to pay the customs duty beforehand and it has to be done through a customs broker. If you google “Car customs clearance” you will find lots of brokers that will do it for you.

    If you arrive at your VRT appointment without the import duties paid they will not process your car for VRT.

    At what stage is VAT at 23% applied? Along with customs duty or after VRT is applied? (Hence paying vat on the vrt also)

    Sorry when I say customs duty I’m referring to the 23% and the 10% combined. You pay them both at the same time, before the VRT appointment

    VAT is a purchase tax based on the purchase price, inc invoice price, shipping, and customs duty - that is, the landed price.

    VRT is a registration tax, based on the vehicle presented for registration and is based on the On he Market Price as determined by Revenue - and is not related to the VAT and Customs Duty based price.

    Revenue are quite transparent on how they calculate the OMS, but it can be based on wrong numbers. Some marques and models are either over-priced or under-priced. [EG. Porsche cars are difficult to predict as they are not listed and must be presented for a VRT price - bit late by then].
