Reg plate not matching for a government vehicle - is this normal ??

Random one, but I came across this video where it had a government BMW 7 Series. Curious to find out which variant it was, I put the registration into a few sites like cartell and motor check and all of them report it as a ford. Is this common for government vehicles ?? assuming it must be a security thing.

I remember when The Queen Of England arrived for a visit the armoured Land Rover didn't show up on the system either when the Irish plates were checked.

Yes, some official gov vehicles are not on the public system when checking reg plates so they won't always be found.

This can be normal & it is usually for security reasons.

They are normally on Cartell though for the make and model, for Garda vehicles both marked and non.

Also odd that the f01 had a 171 plate. They were made between 2008 and 2015, so surely the plate is wrong. It's registered to a ford tourneo.

Some bigger countries, like Britain, the US etc, insist on providing their own vehicles for State visits, but some of the embassies will be happy to fit them with local plates as a courtesy, while others won't.

In the case of the US, as we all know, the armoured Cadillacs arrive on the cargo plane with their Washington DC 800 plates and they carry the President as they would at home.

When Queen Elizabeth was here, her armoured Range Rover was actually a UK Govt vehicle, but fitted with a contemporary Dublin reg plate that was never actually issued, to fit in with the Garda motorcade that was supporting the entourage.

In the case of the German President's visit mentioned in the OP, if you look closely at the full video of the convoy on the Avenue, you'll see its a left hand drive car, with the quad exhausts betraying it as a 760 Li. It is in fact a 760Li High Security, an armoured edition of the F01 owned by the federal government of Germany, with a set of Irish plates from a written off Garda Ford Van thrown on it for the sake of discretion.

You don't think they'd have their Head of State driven around in any old common or garden Berlin taxi do you?

I can tell you all Garda vehicles that are procured are on the tax system, even the big sedans used by the President and Taoiseach etc.

Only diplomatic and foreign security vehicles do not, irrespective of whether they have either genuine or temporary Irish plates.
