Archbishop Desmond Tutu -RIP

Sad news this morning on the passing of Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Whilst (rightly) the primary focus will be on his contributions to end an oppressive regime in South Africa, one of the most engaging pieces of television I ever watched was him mediating discussions between former paramilitaries (many of them convicted murderers) and the families of victims in Northern Ireland.

Not some cherry viewing for St Stephen's Day, but genuinely one of the most gripping pieces of television I ever watched. The segment with Michael Stone convinced me of his lack of any remorse, whatsoever.

Very interesting and decent fellow by all accounts. Even if he was a stickler for traditions of courtesy. Real champion of human rights. He saw some changes in his time! From born into a mixed tribal poor background to helping end apartheid and become a global figure.

He was an Anglican Archbishop. The Anglican church has very different views on contraception to the Catholic Church, accepting artificial contraception as a personal choice since the late 50s.

Did the soweto tour many years ago in Jo burg. Went to manelas family home and saw tutu's house.

I still remember the smell of drink of the priests breath in the church we went to and the sweetness of the Nuns who were there going about their work in spite of him.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu was a longstanding advocate for peace, equality, the ending of the vile South African apartheid regime and also for enlightened approaches to contraception and condoms as a key aspect in battling the AIDS crisis in Africa in the 1990s.

A visionary and a man of integrity. May he Rest In Peace.

A man of God that actually lived the socialist message of Jesus Christ.

He lived a hell of a life.
