I don't know what's happening to accents. I have lived with 2 students the last 2 years, both girls, and they've both been from rural Ireland in Sligo and they have this strange accent, kind of american and elongate certain words.

My guess is that a lot of men are just “camper” than they were allowed to visibly or audibly be in very paranoid homophobic society, which we definitely had right across the western world, and still do to some degree even if it’s much faded.

The current generation don’t give a damn about the need to be macho. I think a lot of people are just more comfortable in their own skin these days. The need to fake a mid Atlantic vibe on air is largely gone too, although the entire accent is shifting to something a bit more mid Atlantic anyway.

(On the Sligo comment: Sligo and the NW generally slips very easily into American accents. The base phonetics aren’t that far apart.)

Not pc but I kinda have to agree with the op and it would seem to be a phenomenon of recent years too. Carl Mullen is a good example Jaz from Spin is another. Both heterosexuals I believe. Maybe it is a mass appeal thing? Then on the other hand you have homosexuals who sound very masculine behind the mic like Darragh O Dea from kfm or Karl Dawson from 98 🤔

Is that not an oxymoron? As I would argue being 'camp' is in itself an act it is self taught. Either consciously or subconsciously.

Plus not all gay men are camp but many put it on to show they are helps with the gaydar I assume.

Plus some hetrosexual men are camp. Normally the overly dramatic artsy types. It would not be Anto from Ballyer more often than not. There would be few from the latter demographic on radio programmes. So the arty set can disproportionately increase level of campness that is on the airwaves. Plus the more 'well to do' /educated speak with that midatlantic type accent with all the 'likes' as fillers - and use upspeak. It is not very far away from the 'gay camp accent'.

The two are becoming closer. However your average Anto from Ballyer will not speak in this fashion.

It is all true that the average Anto from Ballyer will not be a DJ on a widely listened to radio show.
