How does one earth a phone wall socket that breaks phones connected when a storm hits!! Pure Telecom

Pure Telecom are saying there is no fault on the line and the reason the phone breaks is that the wall socket needs earthing!! Phone went at last storm so plugged in a borrowed phone and it works. Have a router as well and that did not break.

Help, how do I earth a wall socket!! Or it is an Eir call out via Pure?

There is not earth on a telephone socket as it's made of plastic... Pure are talking rubbish. It's a well known issue to have lightening during storms cause telephone faults as it inducts current in the lines. I would recommend to plug in a surge protecting socket and plug the phone and router into that.

I used to do a lot of repairs on people's telephone and PC equipment blown from lightning and once they got surge protection it stopped being a problem... or at least if you buy a decent one it will have insurance cover up to a maximum.

Surge protection can help, but when lightning strikes there is no silver bullet

You probably need a sonic screwdriver.

If your services are provided over fibre optic cable FTTH then you may need lightening protection at the incoming terminal box.

Ok - I'm totally baffled by that idea. Can you explain how / why you would need lightning protection for Fibre Optic? How does lightning transmit along a glass / plastic conduit?

Fibre Optic cable has metal wires within it to strengthen the cable for ease of installation etc.

I’m sure it does but I’m assuming that you mean surge protection? Regardless, if lighting strikes there are guarantees that equipment won’t be damaged no matter what you do.

I have so called dead phone with me now and it works!!! I bet its the splitter for adsl thats gone wonky but I don't have that.

Any fibre cable I've seen uses a non- metallic Kevlar yarn as a strengthening member, I stripped down a length of eir's overhead fibre cable, no metal.

It would not be normal to install a lightning protection system in a domestic installation.

House about 75 Metres from us, in an urban area, took a lightning hit about 25 years ago. Blew sockets off the wall as well as things like TV aerial wires, and did a lot of damage to electronics.

We had a TV, phone line Fax splitter box, Fax Machine, Phone switchboard and several other items all blown, and it wasn't mains spikes, it was induced voltages in the (copper) phone line and cable TV system that did the significant damage, and that was with protection devices on the phone line, and none of the services are on poles, they are all underground.

All the affected devices still powered up after the strike, but close investigation proved that it was the other connections to phone or TV service that were no longer working, and it was cheaper to replace the blown devices under insurance than it would have been to repair them.

More lightning protective devices than systems. For example the protective devices on tv aerial sockets, in line co-axial devices on satellite feeds. In the Op’s case the service provider’s suggestion was faulty earthing on a telecom service, which of course could present a risk. Cannot understand why the provider would not have assumed responsibility for such a situation.

However the point is moot now as it seem the Op has an intermittent adsl splitter and no damage to the phone.
