Double heating oil delivery (error).

As the title suggests, we recently ordered 500l of heating oil and paid for it over the phone via. card. I got an invoice in the door 30 days later saying my balance for the 500l was outstanding. Long story short, they messed up and gave us two delivers of 500l. One paid for by card and one outstanding.

According to a very rude lady on the phone, we're being charged for it. She also refused to acknowledge it was an error on their behalf. She immediately tried pass the blame back on us claiming we should have noticed 2 delivery dockets. Which I only ever quickly look at the liters and dump it admittedly. Not that it would matter though, the 2nd delivery was in the tank before the docket was posted.

Has anyone had a similar situation or could give options? Nothing was agreed on the phone and the call was ended abruptly due to their manner.

We don't want or need it, not to mention an extra €435 bill that comes with it.

How did they fill the tank twice without you noticing? Do they have access without anyone there to receive?

Tell them to come and take it back.

Failing that, deliver it back to them yourself. Just make sure to line the boot of your car first.

Will you want oil next winter? Tell them you'll pay for it then.

Did you check the tank to make sure the extra 500l is actually in it?

If they post out the invoice after, there is a chance their billing has just fcuked up

They used to knock and hand the docket until Covid, then it was all done contactless which we didn't mind. Side gate is left open for them.

My partner saw them during one of the visits. Nothing for the 2nd delivery. But I checked the tank, it's definitely been topped up twice, so they must have arrived without us being there. I'm not disputing that.

Yes. I was thinking of this but not sure how happy or accommodating they would be to such arrangement.

If they won't play ball let them come take it back

I had oil delivered to my house before that was meant for a neighbor, I would have paid for it, but they insisted on taking it back.

I wouldn't be offering to pay for it now - prices are high at the moment, they could be way down come next winter.

It's their mistake so I wouldn't be too worried about it. Ask them to take it out and if they don't use it.

Had something somewhat similar before.... Delivered oil to an old tank that it unused ( and dirty) despite note on the order and it clearly marked in the yard. When I rang, they came and delivered new oil to the correct tank, but a second invoice landed. Quick call, no issues - cancelled the invoice and removed the old oil a month or two later.

The fact she is trying to pass the blame could well mean she is the one who messed up.

Its not going to go off so you could keep it but extra 500 quid is a lot a month before christmas.

I'd be looking to either push out the payment or get them to take it back.

The other unusual thing is the price of oil could change so you might be better off at current prices if they extend when it needs to be payed off, or it could be the other way if prices drop, you shouldn't have to pay current price for something you wouldn't order til next year when prices are possibly lower..

Something similar happened to me a few years ago where the oil company delivered it to me instead of a neighbours house.

They gave me two options as I am a regular customer with them. They could come back and take it as it could be done easily, or I could pay for it but they would give me a 15% discount or something like that.

I bought it as it was good value and would be needing it the next year anyway.

In the case of the OP, the company is at fault and it should be completely in their hands what they are going to do about it. You shouldn't be at any financial loss over it.
