Is Eir service and landline automatically cancelled when switching to Virgin Media cable?

I've been helping an older neighbour move from Eircom landline to Virgin Media cable. She already had cable TV so it made sense to upgrade to TV, phone and broadband and cancel the very expensive package (phone only, no broadband) that Eir had her on. Got the VM package upgraded and ported her phone number, all working fine.

I assumed I would have to then cancel the Eir phone service and landline. But when I ring Eir they no longer recognise her phone number or account number, so it's impossible to get through to anyone. Does that mean she's already cancelled by switching? Terrified they're going to keep billing her as I have heard horror stories about Eir cancellations dragging on forever. They have a cancellation address which I plan to send a letter to, but can anyone tell me if the service AND LANDLINE is cancelled by default once she has switched?

Its not impossible to get through to Eir the roundabout way is what you require though as the acc & landline should still be recognised it sounds like a system issue.

If you phone they're sales dept and ask to be passed to customer care you can get around this problem! i would 100% advise you to phone and confirm the account is closed off rather than assume. As you correctly point out Eir has a terrible habit of charging customers even after you switch, very much worth verifying.

Ah okay I see the problem - you ported the phone number which means it’s now no longer an Eir number it’s virgins. They don’t use the same infrastructure so if you pass the number to VM then Eir will no longer recognise.

follow the steps above to make contact with Eir (or use their live chat) and to be honest it might be a safe bet to write a letter and send it to them to make sure you’ve covered all bases!

Once you move to another provider it should automatically get cancelled assuming you are out of contract but no harm following up as sometimes they "forget"

No. This is really important .

If you switched from Eir to Vodafone , it would be cancelled automatically as they use the same phone lines. Just like when you change electricity or gas.

However, Eir and Virgin use totally different infrastructure. You must arrange cancellation when you switch.
