Smoothing interior wall before painting

How would you prepare a wall for painting if some of the old paint has been scraped off as per picture? Would you apply smooth filler along the edges? Having applied smooth filler what grade sandpaper would use to smooth it out?

I'd fill it with a lightweight filler, Homebase do a good own-brand one, but there are many more. Just make sure it's white.

Fill it slightly high, then sand it off with 120 grade sandpaper on a proper sanding block and don't use too much pressure. Otherwise you'll have low-points around the middle.

You'll lose the previous paterna left by the roller, but a few roller-layers of paint should recover most of that.

I find using a filler that you prepare yourself is more flexible than a prepared one and makes Sanding a little easier which will provide a better finish. You will need a scraper to level. Make sure you remove any loose paint too rather than painting over it. Depending on the paint being used, you might add a little water to thin out for an undercoat applied by brush, letting dry and then apply 2 coats with roller to try and get the same texture already on the wall.

See thread above. I used “Toupret” fine surface filler from Screwfix and it did a perfect job

Make sure you remove any loose, flaking paint before doing any more work, otherwise it will all just keep coming off.

But note that this could result in a huge percentage of the paint coming off, especially if the wall was originally prepared badly.
