About to pull the trigger on a 6KwH system but finding it hard to make a call on adding a 5KwH battery or not.

We currently have an EV but am also aware bidirectional charging will become a feature in EV's in a few years which might negate the home battery need.

Also regarding batteries-I have a choice of a 5kwh Puredrive 2 & Solis inverter or a 10kwh Soltaro combined system...just wondering if anyone had first hand feedback on either system.

    Thanks!

Bi-directional charging is a long ways off and there is a pretty big chance it won't happen as it reduces the battery life quite a lot. Can't see any car manufacturers swapping out batteries which costs thousands (or tens) of euro just because we want to run our house.

The new leaf has it and they had many issues with them already.

I have the puredrive myself and it's great because you can get full 100a/5kw charge/discharge unlike some of the smaller batteries which give you less.

And you can daisy chain up them to 20kwh. Downsize is that they are expensive enough. No idea about the Soltaro

I might also have a 5kwh puredrive battery for sale this week or the next as I'm changing my setup - shameless advertising I know 😁

    Hi,

I'm located in the south-east and average usage is 300units per month in summer rising to 350 in the winter months. I WFH 3 days and so the house is daytime occupied 5 days. Large roof area available for panels facing SSW.

I read my meter today twice with a two hour gap. The consumption was 0.7 of a unit in the two hours. That's with tv and electronics on standby, laptop and two 22" lcd screens running, 2 x fridge freezers running and one mugful of water boiled in a kettle. based on that I reckon my daytime use while I'm working would be about 3 to 4 units.

I think that an eddi would be good as I have a toddler who will doubtless consume more and more hot water as she get older :)

The house has a slate roof and I was looking to install around 4KW of panels with an eddi. I've sought quotes and one with good panels is:

    • 12 x 360Wp REC SOLAR panels – 25-year warranty
    • 1 x Solis dual inverter – 5-year warranty
    • MyEnergi Eddi hot water diverter* – 3 year warranty
    • SEAI grant of €2,400 available
    • Cost €7,700 inc VAT @ 13.5% (€5,300 after grant)

The addition of a 5kWh Dyness battery would add a further €3,700 to that.

I'd welcome opinions on the size of the array, the quote itself and whether it's worth getting a battery.

Also, if I didn't get a battery, how easy is it to add one later?

    Thanks

That price for the battery is a bit of a rip-off considering that battery costs around 2k with 23% vat. Unless the price of a hybrid inverter makes some of that up, but even still shouldn't be more than €1000 extra for the hybrid inverter

Thanks for the quick response. The inverter for the quote with the battery does includes a Solis 5kW Hybrid inverter rather than the dual inverter. Everything else mentioned in the quote including battery (Panels, Eddi and installation) is the same as the non-battery quote.

Go for a 6kwh inverter as well, the difference will be tiny and you'll have extra headroom for expansion in the future.

If you go for the Huawei inverter the batteries that will work with it are very limited in choice and expensive. You wont be able to go the DIY battery route like a lot of people on here have.

thanks for the update, I dont think the company is in the running as they were very expensive net after grant nearly €7k for 3.2kW system, no battery, Eddi

We got a quote for a 8kw system.

What do you think of the price?

    20 X 400 watt panels (Jinko)

    1 X 8kw hybrid inverter

    2 X 4kw batteries

    1 X Hub

    1 X Socket at batteries

    €18,875 before €2400 grant

    Commercial or domestic.

6kwh inverter is the limit for a domestic home.

    You need some move quotes.

    Domestic.

Or house also has a heat pump.

I was also quoted for a 6kw system with 15 panels, 6kw hybrid inverter, 2vx 2.4kwv batteries, 1 hub and 1 socket for €14,375 before grant

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,469 ✭✭✭MAULBROOK

On less something has changed regs wise, the inverter can only be 6kwh max. Its the limit set by the ESB. On less 8kwh is a typo.

Is that through EI customer offer? I got a similar quote but with a solis 6kw inverter . The sonnen 5.7kw battery is an extra €5900.00 which seems crazy

got a call back from the solar as a service co today. pleasantly surprised, was talking to the main installer/founder. a mine of information but not patronising. they are open to replacing the thermal panels. will see how it goes.

All VW ID4s will have bidi charging from next year and vw will sell bidi wallboxes too. That means it's not so far away. Solar is a long term investment. No need to rush into batteries as for most people batteries have a marginal payback over time. My install was only last week. I didn't go for batteries because I expect I'll get an EV with V2H in the next few years. Even if I just get a non v2h EV that soaks up some more excess that will be fine too. Who knows what diesel price will be like in a year or two! V2H would be a bonus.

Everyone's situation is different though and you need to do the numbers for your own situation in terms of expected generation and consumption figures, eg are you going to be home during the day while the sun is shining to run washing machines, dryers, bitcoin miners etc etc while you're generating excess power? If not maybe a battery makes more sense for you.

I'd move them rather than replacing them. They give more power per m² than solar will

theres nowhere to move them to, if there was would put pv there and not move them.

Can someone PM me some recommendations for installers in Dublin/Meath area please?

It wasn't an EI offer. It's a company based in Connaught.

I know prices have gone up across the board but some of the quotes for batteries are very high...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 951 ✭✭✭1jcdub

Who are the guys in Enniskillen that people have mentioned?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1 CloudyBlue

Hi all. We are looking to install solar PV shortly and I would be very grateful if those with good experiences might be able to PM me with reputable installers who work around the Dublin area. Thanks!
