Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 - which one AMD or Intel?

I'm going to buy a Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 this week. I had a Surface Laptop 3 & got a warranty refund for a fan issue which seemed fairly common. I have docking station and extra charger etc setup for the Surface so not really looking at anything else. I've read online reviews which seem good but don't fully trust them.

Main problem is I'm not sure what one I should go for. Probably prefer 13.5" as I either use it with a screen at home or when travelling. Below the prices I can see on a site I was thinking of ordering from. Are the AMD Ryzen processors just much better value? I'd probably instinctively go for the i5 at 1199, but wondering what the difference would be in real world performance compared to the cheaper processor with same RAM? The 899 is out of stock at the moment which is making me hesitate, I probably would have ordered otherwise.

Use would be only home office (a lot of video calls and some large ppt editing but nothing else) and general browsing, no gaming.

Where are you seeing the above pricing? or is your pricing above ex Vat?

Seems on the MS site he prices are much more expensive than above?

No it's on a Dutch site including VAT (called Coolblue). Black Friday deals. Since Brexit I always buy laptops or anything similar in the Netherlands as it is one of the few EU countries with a QWERTY keyboard.

can't upgrade ram so should ask yourself is 8gb ram enough.

if not doing constant video editing and heavy IT (virtual machines etc) should be enough for most people

you can change the ssd yourself - m.2 2230 nvme pci ssd is the format size 22m wide , 30mm long

the ryzen 5 cpu will be good unless you want to play games where the xe graphics of the intel i5 will be a bit better

so get the cheapest 749 128gb ssd version and buy yourself a bigger ssd like this (below) and just put it in. save yourself a load of money and end up with a 512gb ssd (same speed spec as Microsoft one)

you end up with a 512gb ssd version for €850

easy to do - ssd just clips in to a socket. will not invalidate any warranty

probably easiest to reinstall windows off usb key (google) but you could clone the drive either

Thanks - much appreciated. I'm using 8gb on my work laptop now and it is broadly fine. I'd prefer to future proof with 16gb but price difference to get to that is almost double.

I've changed an SSD myself before & reinstalled Windows via USB, so should be doable
