My Son's School has banned conkers because they might shatter and damage our darling's eyes ! This **** has gone far enough.

Where does it end ?, Fizzy drinks could explode ? Shoe Laces ? Could cause a trip ? Sharp Pencils ?

It's gone totally stupid now.

Gonna guess it's less about "snowflakes" and "sissies" as it is about compo and insurance to be honest.

Maybe if people didn't look for the biggest payout they could get when they scrape their knee, the school mightn't feel the need to do this.

They were banned a good few years ago from my lads school after he rocked up with a bucketload of prepped conkers for all in the class

My kids are in a rural NS and playing Conker fights on the yard is a big thing during Autumn,children just told not to tamper with the ‘natural’ state of conkers.

Back in the day lads were known to paint them with nail varnish to harden them up:)

It’s a chance for them to play a normal fun activity which their parents partook in.Thankfully our schools teachers are sensible people.

Banned 30 years ago for me. As was running. Nothing new. I think it's an awful shame, but I don't blame schools given the compo culture and high insurance costs in this country.

Maybe it has, maybe it hasn't. But when you're an entity open to litigation, are you going to wait for a child to lose his eye and be sued? Or are you going to take proactive action to prevent it?

Or if they're playing football in PE and one kid shoves the other into the wall while theyre chasing the same ball and its intentional but the teacher isn't clued in enough to have taken any notice.

That's my point, people will sue, so the school is protecting itself. Away from school property, not their problem.

Running in the yard was banned in the primary school I went to 40 years ago. Not sure if conkers were banned, but that game where two people throw a coin to see which one can get it to land closest to the wall was outlawed. But I think that was because it was winner takes all, and therefore similar to gambling.

Given that they allowed teachers to punch children in the chest, hang them by their ankles out the second story window - and in one case strip a ten-year-old child down to his underwear, throw his clothes out the window and make the almost naked child go down and get them with the whole school watching - I’m not sure why they banned the running because child safety clearly was not a priority.

They banned skipping ropes in my school 30 years ago. As far as I can remember, some girl got her legs badly cut when she got caught up in one of those heavier ropes that you'd have two kids turning. I don't remember running being banned but I'm pretty sure we weren't allowed to play with tennis balls in the yard. Conkers weren't really a thing where I grew up but I can understand why they'd be banned. My dad was pretty easygoing when it came to any games that came into our house, except for one type. Things like catapults, bows and arrows and toy guns that propelled things out of them were banned. Some lad in his class had lost an eye when some kid's game went wrong and that made a huge impression on him.

What you have is a nation of litigants. Next time you are at the school look around at the other parents, they are the people who will happily take the school/ insurance for every cent they can at every opportunity, they are the people you need to rant at.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a kid being seriously injured to the point of hospitalization or to the point of visiting a morgue due to conker usage, or being a victim of a conker attack.

Ask your Board of Management. There's normally two parents and two teacher reps on it.

Chances are they either have a pending case or their insurers are handling a case for another school and have now excluded them cover.

Running was banned in my primary school because of a case taken as a result of injury.

Can't blame the school for that.
