    Hi everyone

Return flight to France soon with Aer Lingus

Not sure if I’ll get new passport on time. Website says about documentation, so can I fly with my Driver’s Licence instead of my expired Passport?

If so - is there any other things I’ll need to do/be aware of when flying where I might encounter trouble?

    Thank you

You will need a passport to fly to France.

    No passport no fly.

You could try an emergency passport if it's an emergency...

Must be a magic Aer Lingus driving licence. If it is any consolation the Passport Office is very quick these days, providing you apply online. It got one last week and took 4 days and two of those were a weekend.

Thanks guys - no dice on emergency so I’ll just have to hope passport arrives.

Applied for renewal this-day-last-week and it’s still at processing stage

Have you contacted them and asked for their help? They are usually very helpful in my experience.

I applied for renewal a few weeks ago on a Friday and the passport book was delivered by the Tuesday. (I ordered the card too, but that took an extra 3-4 working days IIRC).

To travel in the Schengen area you you need, if required by the authorities, to be able to:

    • Identify yourself using a passport or national identity card
    • Justify your presence in the Schengen area (usually not an issue for EU citizens)
    • Demonstrate that you have sufficient funds and insurance for the duration of your trip

Although it is unusual, it is possible for an EU state to refuse you entry.

    In practical terms that means:

    • You will not even be allowed to board a plane to France without a passport
    • Make sure you have your EU healthcare card with you
    • Make sure you have a credit card with a sufficient limit or a bank statement to show sufficient funds for the trip
    • While in France carry your passport or card on you

Almost all the time there will be no issues and often officials are even willing to accept none standard documents etc… but it only takes one by the book official to impact your holiday.

Ireland is not in the Schengen area. Also travelling within and boarding flights are different

You won't be allowed to board an Aer Lingus flight to France without a passport. If you get turned back in France with an expired passport, the airline that you flew with will get fined and they, in turn, will trace back to find which of their employees on the gate scanned your boarding pass but didn't check your passport and let you through. They will get a reprimand or worse. So there is no incentive for them to let you board.
