Seal gas pipe in sleeve?

I believe I have mice coming into my house where the utility pipes come in (water and gas coming up from concrete floor).

The water pipe appears to be just coming up straight from the ground, with a decent gap around it (see pic attached). The gas pipe is directly under the sink carcass and I couldn't get a pic but I can see that it is in a white plastic sleeve pipe and is sticking up a bit from the floor.

For the water one I think I can put a metal plate or something around it but for the gas one I plan on stuffing it with copper mesh. The only question is, what can I use to seal that mesh in? My reading online says that silicone etc can react with the copper pipe. UK sites suggest using flue jointing compound but I can't seem to find that over here.

Any ideas of what is appropriate/approved?

Ye, +1 on the can of expanding foam. Shove the nozzle down as far as you can and let rip. When it's hard you can cut away the excess and tidy it up.

The below is a general 'signature' and not part of any post:

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Public transport user? If you're sick of phantom ghost services on the 'official' RTI sources, check bustimes.org for actual 'real' RTI, if it's on their map it actually exists.
