    I already explained that.

This is a PSO service. PSO services are provided where there is an assessed need for subsidised public transport to be provided due to no commercial alternatives being provided.

In this case there are no services out of Galway towards Loughrea after the Citylink route 763 and HealyBus route 920 departures from Galway at 18:00 because neither company deems it economic to provide them.

There has been a clamour of demand from local politicians for a bus service to be provided from Galway to Loughrea after 18:00 and this is what this service delivers.

There are departures on commercial route 763 from Loughrea to Galway all evening long from every two hours from 16:50 to 00:50 as Citylink operates them through from Dublin Airport and Dublin to towns between there and Galway and deems them to be economic on the basis of the combined demand all along the full route.

To suddenly start operating the subsidised route 439 in service back to Galway from Loughrea when there already is a commercial service in operation would potentially be deemed unfair competition under EU competition rules.

So the bus will just head back via the M6 to position for the next trip out of Galway. The cost of that would have been taken into account when assessing for the need for such a service.

I find it hard to believe that there isn't already an hourly service in place between Galway and Loughrea. Every 2hrs at peak times seems mad to me, but there you go.

Safe to assume due to a historically poor public transport offering, most people make that trip in a car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 19,092 ✭✭✭✭LXFlyer

I am quoting the times from Loughrea to Galway in the evening above. That’s not peak time for that route.

Peak flow is from Loughrea to Galway in the morning and from Galway to Loughrea in the afternoon/evening.

There are more frequent departures on routes 763 and 920 during the peak periods in the directions of peak travel flow.

I would suggest that perhaps you might examine the timetables:

    Citylink 763:

It's interesting that there may be a mix of commercial and PSO services on the same route.

E.g. this case, Galway to Clifden, etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 19,092 ✭✭✭✭LXFlyer

Galway to Clifden has always had a PSO service, and therefore they have grandfather rights.

The commercial 923 service on the Galway-Clifden route is a recent addition - therefore in that particular case, the commercial operator Citylink was fully aware of there being subsidised services in place when they launched their own commercial service.

Fair enough point that peak time is being in the morning. However, my actual point is that I'm surprised Loughrea has such a poor overall offering.

Between the 2x operators, there are just 3x services in the morning that get in before 9am, one of those being at 8.55am. Another 3x get in at 9.45am, 10am and 10.25am. After that it's roughly one service every 2hrs.

Surely they could introduce a more consistent regular timetable with a single operator that might actually encourage more people out of cars. It's very poor.

    I emailed the NTA about the proposed 243 route being stuck in constant purgatory and got this response;

“Thank you for contacting the NTA. Unfortunately the implementation of route 243 has be delayed due to funding and resource issues.  We do not have a new date for implementation yet but hope to revisit this in the new year. I understand this was not the news you were hoping for and regret to inform you that I do not have a more favourable response.”

Resources I knew about but a lack of funding is a new one and a real worry, though I kind of admired their honesty at least.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 19,092 ✭✭✭✭LXFlyer

The funding issue is certainly not new - I wrote about it here months ago.

The rollout of the plan slowed this year, but has picked up recently.

The CEO of the NTA admitted at the Oireachtas Transport Committee back in the summer that the rollout of the Connecting Ireland network would now likely happen over six years rather than five.

We are now at the end of year three.

Capwell (the garage for the 243) has had a massive driver shortage for the second half of the year and is still not back to full strength, so it will be sometime next year before we see any progress.

Feeder service 1426 in Donegal between Stranorlar and St Johnston has been withdrawn.

    https://www.transportforireland.ie/news/changes-to-bus-services-between-stranorlar-and-st-johnstown-donegal-1426-and-480/

Changes to bus services between Stranorlar and St Johnstown Donegal 1426 and 480

    9th January 2025

From Monday, 13th January 2025, Service 1426, which operates one daily return service between Stranorlar and St Johnstown (Monday to Friday), will no longer be in operation.

Bus Éireann Route 480 offers connectivity for the region with more frequency

This decision has been made following a review of service usage and alignment with existing routes in the region. While Service 1426 is being withdrawn, passengers will still have access to Bus Éireann Route 480, which covers the same alignment.

Route 480 offers connectivity for the region, including direct services into Derry, providing an alternative travel option for commuters and maintaining essential links for the affected areas. Route 480 operates more frequently, supporting passengers traveling between Stranorlar, St Johnstown, and beyond.

The National Transport Authority, in collaboration with TFI Local Link Donegal Sligo Leitrim, is committed to providing reliable and efficient public transport options for communities across Donegal.

This change is subject to review in the future to ensure that service levels meet the needs of the local communities.

The Balbriggan town service basically being two, or even three? different services but all with one number is incredibly confusing. It was running wildly behind schedule the day I was using it, and I ended up getting a taxi back in to the town instead!

It’s currently two separate loops (one north and one south) from the station.

It will now operate end to end from Hastings Green to Millfield SC and v.v. via the railway station, but following the existing routings (taking one routing southbound and a different route northbound).

That B1 route is really a mess - reminds me of the old 185. Also, not being from Balbriggan but having family there, it's not the most helpful when the front of every bus just says 'B1 Balbriggan'. Yes, I know I'm in Balbriggan… Good to see the two loops becoming one and it being simplified a bit though. Bustimes.org shows the new timetable starting from 11th May currently - likely an upload error.

Well off topic, but I feel the route should have been included in the city bus network under BusConnects and given an L number. Bray and Greystones (and Celbridge/Leixlip) all have local town services that don't leave the town but are under the city bus network.
