Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

Can a PC Monitor and Firestick be used without TV licence?

    Just wondering if someone could use a Monitor with inbuilt speakers and HDMI ports, and one of those firesticks that most people use for watching sport in a home without having to buy a TV licence since technically it's not a TV, and they don't have a TV box like Saor View or Sky/Eir, etc. If they were to let the guy into house and show Monitor would they have to pocket the firestick or could they leave it in TV?

    PS they never watch rte or any of the free channels, just in case any morally superior humans wanted to assert their dominance.

    I think they say in the ad if you watch tv on it then you need a tv licence. It’s €13 a month.Just pay it and no need to worry about the knock at the door then. Life’s too short for unnecessary stress

    If you have no apparatus capable of receiving a broadcast signal in your home and are not receiving a broadcast transmission then you are not obliged to purchase a TV licence.

    On demand services are not broadcast signals.

    You do not need a TV licence to watch television on your computer, phone or other device (for example, RTÉ Player or streaming services like Netflix).

    However, the computer, phone or other device must not be capable of receiving a television signal by cable, satellite or aerial.
