    Hi

Have moved into a rented house and there's an old stove there in the fireplace..

looks to be relatively old - is there a way to figure out if that stove is capable of burning coal? as opposed to just logs

    cheers

Ask the land lord might be easiest. I had a new stove put in an it had to have a multi fuel thing fitted at bottom of it but without a make/model would be hard to advise.

I think if it has just one vent and no grate in the firebox for fuel to sit on it's just wood. Coal needs air underneath and above it. Wood doesn't.

I'd still check with the landlord to be sure though.
