Is it worth building at the moment?

    Hi All,

I have a GTX 770 that I'm not using at the moment and my son wanted to build a PC for his confirmation next year.

Is it worth building anything around this graphics card or should I start with other components?

I would need everything else, but I presume I could buy second hand parts?

Can any of you advise what should I be looking for in terms of motherboard, memory, etc?

Budget I would like to stick to would be in the region of 500 euro, without the monitor and peripherals.

An SSD for the system, 8 to 16 GB of RAM, all he does is play some games (Minecraft, Fortnite) so not sure about system requirements.

Second-hand market has been FUBAR for the last 1-2 years.

Build around the GTX 770 but be aware that it was made EOL this month - meaning no more driver updates. Should be fine for Minecraft/Fortnite though and you can drop in most any GPU when funds & availability improve.

Motherboard is the cheapest I could find with over 8x USB ports.

Depends how old the system is and if they have receipt for parts. I don't think it's worth a penny over 800 to be honest even with the market the way it is.

980 seems like it's close to the "new MSRP" price alright.
