Woodquay Park gets funding

From Councillor Martina O'Connor on Facebook

Minister Catherine Martin T.D. and Fáilte Ireland announced €1,030,350 in funding for Woodquay Park!

The project will include Light installation artwork, a traditional Galway Hooker, an intimate performance space for Woodquay Park.

Its finally happening!!

No doubt there'll be more in the local rags tomorrow with more details so stay tuned 😎

I'm sure the residents will be delighted with converting their neighbourhood to public drinking zone.

Especially poignant to have it announced this weekend, when new students have so pronounced in their enjoyment of the area.

I think they're just pouring that funding into the small park. Seems like overkill.

Surely the clue is in the name, Park. I would have assumed it's the small gated, fenced park down by the Rowing club.

This type of event is great but from looking at the plans I don't think this event could happen in the updated park design when implemented.

€1m might he better focused on community projects and simple updates to make the park more usable by the community.

Council cancelled it due to 'adverse weather conditions and a weather warning'. Eh, it's a stunning sunny day calm day, 18c. No rain due till next weekend and no warnings in place.

It may be in the outdoor space of the boat club (but still on their premises). That's where they had some GIAF stuff recently.

Apparently some of the residents objected to it taking place in the park. It is their right, of course, to object and make their feelings known, but the decision to move it seems strange to me.

If you choose to live beside a public park then you are signing up to the normal activities that a city centre park would be expected to feature. A showcase for local bands to perform for free, once in a blue moon, doesn't seem outlandish to me. Especially when it's on a Saturday afternoon and will be over by 6PM.

Disagree. This is a city fringe park, which exists mainly to provide green space for the residents, because most of their homes have little outdoor space. It's not the right venue for ticketed organised events drawing people from other areas.

Especially as their are plenty of other venues for such events nearby, which already have appropriate facilities ( toilets, shelter etc).

It wasn't a ticketed event. It's a public event in a public park for the public.

It's a park open to anyone, not just residents.

If they want it just for themselves they can foot the 1m bill for its renovation

They absolutely would, not many of them in use these days either given that a lot of the properties opposite are Airbnb or the like.

Going back a few years now but I know a lot of the older residents were crying out for that park to be renovated for years. I think a space for grandkids to play and less enclosed to discourage anti socal behavior were the main reasons given. Not sure where you'd find the research now but there was lots of face to face discussions done at the time with residents and businesses.

These residents have one of the worst city-fringe areas for ASB as it is. You'd think that a simple gteet area with some kids play equipment would not be difficult but apparently it is.

Somebody in one of the houses beside the park died on Friday. That may have had something to do with the move due to noise etc.

I think their biggest issue was that it's gone from a lovely community area that they all grew up and raised families in to an area you pass through to get somewhere. It's mainly temporary renters and car parking spots.
