Sky Q technical setup - for a newbie

Hi all,

so I've had Sky for 20+ years - was wired when the house was being built so I got the cable (single) from the dish put into the wall rather than running down the side of the house. I know I can't currently watch one channel and record another at the same time but I'd like to - does Sky Q also require two cables to the main box to do this?

I've a quad LNB but will that need to be upgraded for Sky Q and how about the dish itself? If the process is easy I might upgrade but if it's messy/complicated/expensive I probably won't bother.

Any advice appreciated.

Sky Q uses a wideband LNB, I think it gives 4 channels per cable to record at once but I am not 100% sure if that's fully across the entire range of channels or if it would be only against half the entire selection and a 2nd cable required for the rest.

What you should get is a hybrid lnb, this has 2 wideband connections for Sky Q and 4 connections for non Sky Q boxes to use, no repositioning of the dish is required, here's one...

A standard SkyQ install would be a new wideband LNB requiring 2 cables to the main box, one cable for each polarisation. There is a single cable SCR option available with an SCR LNB fitted, there is a post somewhere here where this was done. Both LNBs can feed multiple tuners in the SkyQ box, up to 6 for recording IIRC.

If the current dish is 20 years old a new Mk.4 dish will be fitted to accommodate the new LNB, Mk.4 dishes are around since 2008 IIRC.
