Full Fibre Connection Available But Not Enough Sockets?

Today I was enquiring about getting Fibre (for a property we're interesting in buying) as it's available in the area and was told by Eir that there are not enough sockets available on the cabinet, to get fibre, someone would need to give up their connection up for us to take it.

Has anyone experience with this, can you get OpenEir to upgrade the exchange to make broadband available? The house next door, further from the cabinet, has a fibre connection.

What are the alternatives in this scenario, can you still get the "up to 100mb" internet connection? Given that it's rural (Meath, 20mins outside of Trim) and NBI page tells me "Your premises is not included in the national rollout." as internet providers provide a service greater than 30mbps what are the chances of getting fibre?

Given they mention the cabinet, it's like its actually not FTTH, but FTTC. Eir announced recently that they're upgrading 200k premises from FTTC to FTTH. There's a reasonable chance that you would be part of that. It's worth checking your status here:

Try Sky or vodafone, I had the same problem about a year ago and like that Eir told me they didnt have any spare slots, but Sky and other operators should have a number set aside for themselves. I got sky, now it was **** 15mb BB but it was better than nothing....

This is what I get when I look at the site you linked

It would suggest it has fibre, the house directly beside it and maybe a couple further up the road have fibre from what I could see on the same site.

I didn't try sky, Vodafone couldn't find the premises. There's no phone line there which probably won't help things. I only checked online, didn't make calls.

No you can’t . Some smaller providers might have more interest to go extra mile though ( poking OpenEir , checking port status etc)

VDSL is available, "currently no ports available" for fibre.

At least vdsl is something resembling broadband.

Sky sold you ADSL by the sounds of it, which is on a different type of port than the VDSL which was still full. Eir could have sold you the same thing had you asked for it.

Vodafone: Fibre rollout planned but nothing else available other than 4G 🤷‍♂️

Sky: Check with Eir/Vodafone as they don't have it on the system (may be an error)

    Not looking to great

Yep , keep in mind though, VDSL( FTTC) is the copper line ( feed from the cabinet) which has to be installed to the house already, otherwise they won't install NEW copper line if Fiber optics available in your area .

Fiber optic (FTTH) not cabinet related , it is bypassing cabinets , direct feed from exchange.

I don't remember seeing and copper lines to the house. This seems like a typical Irish problem where one house was skipped whole all others got fibre 🤣

It's not looking to promising, maybe starlink is an option until there's fibre there.

alec76 gave you the best advice in that going to a smaller provider like Digiweb or Airwire is your best bet. The larger operators just won't want to know. Hopefully it is just an admin error and it can be fixed but...

The bad news is that there is a chance that that the distribution point (box on the pole) for fibre has been set up for four premises and there are currently four premises connected to it. If this is the case you're screwed. Unless you get moved to another distribution point by Open Eir, which is unlikely, or Open Eir undertake work to enable more connections in your current DP which is equally unlikely, you will never get a fibre connection unless one of your neighbours cancels and you take their place.

You would then be relying on the National Broadband Plan to connect you except you currently would not qualify for that so you'll have the hassle of trying to convince them that you actually can't get a fibre service when online checkers are saying you can.

The VDSL message is nonsense, you're miles away from the nearest exchange or cabinet so that is also a non-runner.

Check with some smaller operators and if they say no I'd be looking at other houses if broadband is important to you.

As this somewhere you are looking to buy do the existing residents already have FTTH by any chance? If they are using one of the points on the DP and its full I think the checker may still show ports full even though that premises is using of them.

Could be worse. Someone move the house and didn't pay the bill. It would take some time before they released port for the new customer.
