Help with messages, please

Hi there,

When I click on the message icon (top left) it opens with "There was an error - try again later". The All Messages button does work, but unfortunately, I've lost most of my inbox messages (though there are a few there?)

Could someone take a look for me? I would really appreciate if the inbox messages could be retrieved

Also, looking at my profile, I don't have a messages option to edit at all?

Hi. There isn't an option to edit messages on anyone's profile page. Are you thinking of the old site where you did have that option?

We know about the "There was an error" that you see when you click on Messages. This is being worked on and stems from the same issue we had when deleted messages reappeared on the new site. You can read about that here. The site owners took action that you can read about here and deleted messages older than 30 days as a temporary precaution. I'll find out if/when your messages will be restored and get back to you, but this will only be when the core issue has been resolved first.

The link doesn't work for me and looking at the address I thought it meant the profile?

I can't access sent mail either and can't see where the user control panel is?

The date of that PM from Spear was June 20th. Our site was moved to a brand new platform on July 15th. For that reason, everything in Spear's PM is now obsolete. PMs are now in the form of conversations. A bit like Facebook. There is no 'sent items' option on the new platform. Everything you send is now saved by default and that cannot be turned off.

You click on 'Leave Conversation' on the mobile version, I jave just recently realised that the same option is not on desktop so have asked for that to be added asap.

We hadn't said we were adding the ability to delete messages. I did say the option to 'Leave Conversation' needed to be added to the desktop version of the site and this is still on the list at the moment.

To be honest, leaving a conversation performs the same function as deleting a PM ever did. It is no longer in your inbox but still in the other person's inbox. Once they also leave the conversation, it will be removed entirely. If there are more than 2 people in the conversation, when the last person leaves the conversaation it will be deleted entirely...until then a copy of it exists because someone still has it in their inbox. Does that make sense?

As above, leaving the conversation (available on mobile site only at the moment) will delete it from your inbox. On our previous platform, vBulletin, deleting a PM performed the same function.

I cant understand how there is no "DELETE MESSAGE " function.....

There isnt any on desktop ........ I asked this question 4mths ago, and still nothing sorted !!!

Are you talking about deleting posts on a thread, or a message as part of a private message thread. When someone says message they're usually referring to the latter. And in that case, as mentioned previously, simply leaving the private message discussion deletes the discussion.

There is no option to "leave discussion" , and all the messages are still in the message 'envelope' .

As there is limited space (?) for messages, you would need to delete old messages so it doesnt get full.

Hmm, I went looking for it, and I can't see it now either. I had been sure it was there in the past.

It is not yet added to the desktop site but as you pointed out, is available on the mobile site. It's on a list of things to be added/updated but I'm not too sure when it will be done yet.

Spear already explained above that 'Leave Conversation' is the same thing as deleting the message, however at the moment you can only do it from the mobile site until we add it ti desktop. If you meant delete an individual message rather than the whole thread, then no this is not possible and not on the list of things tso be done at the moment.

I just checked on mobile, can be done really quickly in a couple of clicks if you could do that? Just log in, leave conversations, then log out if you don't like mobile browsing etc. It would solve your inbox filling up problem in five minutes. 😊
