New rider I've learner permit and done IBT for category A last month. Rang Carol Nash up for quote on a cbr650 and they told me to contact ndls as it was coming up that my licence type didn't cover that bike. He said it was not that they wouldn't insure me but the ndls system said I hadn't correct licence for this bike. Will have to wait until tomorrow to contact ndls but normally you get a different answer from them depending on who you get on the phone.

    Anyone else come across this?

    Thanks

Have you A1, A2 and A listed on back of learner permit?

Your IBT cert should list category A also?

Sounds like the rep was talking porkies, probably a case of him not wanting to give you bad news.

Did you try principle insurance? It's well known that anything with R on the end of it is difficult to get insured on for the first time.

I would ring Carole Nash again and hopefully you get someone else on the phone.

I asked him straight out was it them not wanting to but he said they would insure me if ndls said I had right license type. Maybe you are right

Whatever is on your learner permit is what NDLS would have on the system....me thinks a bit of ham acting going on!!

    try Principal my advice.

Are principal good for learners? Or better all round?

Rang the ndls and they said no restrictions on my permit.

Rang principal and they said they they don't insure new riders on cbr650 as they said its a sportsbike. So I asked about a ninja 650 they said they classed it as a sportsbike too, which I was surprised about.

Rang Carol Nash again talked to different person, said nothing about my licence and said they would insure me for 900.

I would have assummed the n650 was classed a sport bike but worth asking just in case anyway !!

The definition of a sportsbike is all over the place with these insurance companies and they dont like the name "sport" or "Ninja" and just pile on the price excess

I thought the ninja 650 with the more upright sitting position would not be classed as same as the cbr

yeah as duke dan say R SPORT or ninja are bad bad words :P

So, is it a comprehensive or TPFT insurance you're getting on CBR 650? For a brand new or an older bike?

I found recently a sportsbike to many insurers was anything with the letter 'R' in it. Especially if it's CAPS 😃

I've had 2 x 'learners' in my house, and Liberty worked best for both of them.

Yes and the more R's the worse it gets. cbr1000rr fireblade really took the biscuit for me with 4 R's. In fact the cbr600rr was only marginally better coming in with 3. Honda really dropped the ball there, where kawi yam and suzuki kept their R's to a minimum, usually just the one. Now the real question for the OP is are you talking cbr650r or cbr650f, because despite being damn near the same bike one has twice the R's. A good option would be the cb equivalents which cut the R count right down and are also the same bikes minus the fairings and clip-ons, more comfortable too.

Out of interest OP what age are you?

I was in the exact same position as you last year, Learner permit, just completed IBT in Cat A and I bought a CBR650F,

I got insurance with Principal Insurance for just over €500, they had no issues insuring me but I had just turned 40 so maybe if your a bit younger?

Sorry guys it was a cbr650r. And I'm 43 so I guess that helped
