Screwdriver Set

Would anyone be able to recommend a good screwdriver set?

Just did a quick search on Screwfix and this one (https://www.screwfix.ie/p/stanley-fatmax-mixed-screwdriver-set-12-pcs/44414) looks quite good but I'm not sure what to look out for with these and I thought I'd see if anyone here would have any reccommendations first, thanks!

The Aldi and Lidl tools are generally very good. But instead of individual screwdrivers, you're probably better off getting a ratchet screwdriver (Stanley is good) with interchangeable bits.

I bought a lovely set from Draper more than 20 years ago, same style is still available and they have been brilliant- lovely durable cabinet style handle, chrome plated blade and tips have not worn out with use. German made CK screwdrivers are not expensive and pretty good too. I will admit I have several PZ and Phillips screwdrivers from Aldi and Lidl and not a thing wrong with them either. Be careful with interchangeable bits, sime are better than others, with poor fit in PZ sizes being an issue with sime brands.

Problem with interchangeable bit screwdrivers is first the bits tend to get lost unless you are very disciplined about storing them after each use (I'm not) and the handle and stem can be too bulky for the occasional job. I tend to use power screwdrivers which offend on both these points, but they do make life easier 😀

Indeed, a thick shaft can make access difficult all right :) But seriously, you're right, keep the hex shanked bits for use in an electric drill/ screwdriver and get a set of normal screwdrivers of varying lengths ... short/stubby, normal and long for those more awkward to get at jobs.

I am jealous. A set of normal long shaft screwdrivers is also a must, but these days, you are more likely to find some annoying anti-tamper head fastener at the bottom of a hole than something with a phillips or posix head on it.

Thanks for all the responses. I'd like to get a quality set (a buy it for life kind of thing) so I don't mind spending a bit more, if it's worth spending a bit more? If that makes sense.. So for that reason I might leave off the Aldi ones.

From looking at reviews online, the interchangeable ones aren't the best as people have said here, even with the premium ones you can get a wobble with them and you can loose the bits etc.

It looks like Wera and Wiha are recommended a good bit online from what I can see.. would one of these brands be the best to go for?

Even if I setttle on a brand it's a bit confusing to trying figure out what to go for, like there's these two 7 piece sets by Wera on Screwfix but I have no idea why one is nearly double the price of the other?

Both of those sets are for using on electrics so unless you intend to they are going to be just expensive screwdrivers. The sets in Aldi or Lidl are more than good enough for general d.i.y and I have sets from them for over 15 years and still perfect.

Wera stuff is lovely, I have a set of their allen keys.

Himself got me a set of Stanleys and Bahco VDEs for Christmas one year and they're just lovely. A random set of Aldi ones is still going, and the Halfrauds ones are also holding up well. Like, the fancier ones are a bit nicer, but like, nothing stopping you having crap ones and good ones, I mean, the big Aldi flat head is the designated paint can opener...
