Just found out son 20 has two summons for having Ketamine for own use. Is he likely to get criminal conviction.

He most likely wont get a record, probably not. Does he have priors? More importantly, does he play GAA?

Ok well from my own and others experience with small amounts he will most likely be fine. Try not to worry too much about it, it mustn't be nice hanging over you. Most kids experiment with drugs and carry on to have good lives.

Is there a chance that he works a side job as a vet?

Ketamine always reminds me of "In Bruges".

Less of the horse jokes, please. The OP was only asking equestrian.

how was he caught? he's fair unluckly if it really is a small amount and for personal use as loads of young people at it.

he'll be grand OP. of course you'll have a talk to tell him to stop using that stuff anymore. but also have a talk on not getting caught by the law... I know that's not a right thing to say but average people can get fair unlucky sometimes

Not much point talking to him unless the lad's name is Ed.

Has he a stable job with a good track record?

You need to make him a member of your local GAA club ASAP. There's an automatic statutory reduction in sentencing if you can show that your membership and insurance are up to date. A statement from the management committee can help too but that's at the judge's discretion.

Dont know it just says section 3, was a college student.

Yes get him down to the local GAA club immediately. Followed by a good reference from the manager. Then he’ll get off with a contribution to a charity.

He’ll get off with the probation act anyway.

Not being judgey but K can get fierce addictive if it's being used constantly, but so would the likes of constant recreational cocaine use, but it's a different type of psychological addiction than cocaine in my opinion, it's a huge escapism from reality

I have seen many people struggle with it over the year's, people can mess their kidney's and bladder's up, I've known people to píss blood after major usage of it after a certain amount of time, and not be able to hold their bladder after a few social pints and wet themselves...

I get why people take drugs like that but it's not for me I am afraid...

Hope your son gets the help he needs and can stay away from it, it's not as harmless as people who casually take it make it out to be...

Did he tell you that or did you find out some other way.

If he told you that's good.

Conviction might be the last of your worries TBH.

See above post this stuff is not to be taken lightly.

He needs a story op to avoid a conviction, is he a student or working?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,277 ✭✭✭poisonated

i am sorry to hear that. I don’t think that people should do drugs. You’re quality of life is completely diminished if you get a drugs conviction.

People really should check out the side effects of drugs.

Ketamine is a bad one and can have long lasting effects.

The judge will probably give him 4 faults

  • Agree with the GAA Club suggestions. Alternatively you could get him to go on a crime spree over the next few weeks to rack up the court appearances and get those solicitors salivating about future earning potential from your son.

Either of the above are good suggestions.

So he has been caught two times and has two summons. I would be asking myself how many times has be not been caught with the drug, Getting caught once would be unlucky and not learning his lesson getting caught a second time also say to me he is on the Gardai radar now and they watching him. Does he has an addiction issue trying to get that sorted out would be more important to his long term future than a couple of summons.

Not the brightest if he manages to get caught frequently

You try and be alert and see the cops coming when you're out of your box on Ket!!!

No thank you, not my poison of choice.

Seriously OP, have a conversation about how not to get caught. This is embarrassing to read.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,117 ✭✭✭spaceHopper

If he begs forgiveness and promises to be good he will probably get a slap on the wristy but get a solicitor on the case or he will probably get a record.

Also he was caught twice, what else is he not telling you? Is he dealing? Is he hanging around with somebody well know to the cops?

If he gets caught again he'll definitely get a record possibly even time

Back in the 1990's, I was convicted of possession of a small amount of cannabis (10-20 quids worth). I received a 200 pounds fine, plus conviction and a threat of a custodial sentence if I kept doing it. Hopefully your son's judge will be more lenient. Adam Clayton was charged with possession and intent to supply a few years earlier and got probation and paid about 25 grand to charity. I didn't use a solicitor, it may be a good idea for your son to use one if he intends to emigrate in the future.

Also make sure he's appropriately dressed for his court appearance , grey tracksuit, stupid looking haircut and if it's cold ,a Canada Goose jacket.

    Get legal advice OP.

And get the best representation you can afford if it goes to court. It could be the best investment you'll ever make for your son.

    Good luck.

College student, partying to much came clean and told, swears there is nothing else coming down the line. Back home working summer job.

Seems remorseful and ashamed never thought we would find out

Has said summons has woke him up hopefully that is true will find out shortly. Aware that if he was caught twice only tip of Iceberg in regards how many times he took it.

The judge will also look at things likes, is he in college, does he have a job in other words is a productive member of society also is he selling, a fright might not do him any harm.
