Not sure how I feel about this. Guinness are to launch a non alcoholic version - https://www.guinness.com/en-ie/our-beers/guinness-0.0/

I’m interested in trying it, not sure I’ll like it though.

The only zero alcohol beer I like is the Heineken one as I think it’s the closest in flavour to the original, but I don’t actually like Heineken anyway.

Would be great to not be the weirdo paying €3.20 for 250ml of coke on a night out though.

Had it first impressions not great. Didn't buy a second. I've no issues with zero percent anything.

Will try a different pub see if it's different but it only gets a second chance.

    Sheehan's in Chatham Street Dublin.

Was quite surprised to see the tap as I didn't know it was out for sale yet.

Had a pint today. Pulled from a surger machine and can I believe - is that the same setup everywhere?

Anyway, thought it was decent enough. Bit sweet, touch of banana, and not as much bite as the original - but still a palatable option while driving.

Had it in a pub in the West, €4.40, pulled from a can which is the surger system I’d say.

Will have it again, tasted fine, head stayed all the way to the last drop, tbh I’ve had much worse pints of Guinness.

I'd be interested in giving this a go nothing worse than being in the pub when having to drive and having minerals or Heineken 0% as the only palatable options.

Is it available now folks? I asked in 3 pubs last weekend (naas area) and none of them had it

I had one in the Queen's in Dalkey a few weeks back after having 3 pints of the real thing, was a can from a surger machine. Tasted fine to me, the best NA beer I've tasted to date. They hadn't chilled the can quite down to the level the pints were being served at either so possibly would have been a bit nicer if they had. I wouldn't sit there and drink six of them but one or two when I'm driving would be fine.

Are the Guinness 0.0 cans available from off licences and/or supermarkets yet?

Not yet, pubs are getting it first. Late August or early September for off licences is the last I heard from the local diageo rep.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,216 ✭✭✭✭listermint

    I thought it was blackcurranty.

Too sweet for my liking . Will have to check it again. Maybe the glass was crap but I gave it a 3/10

You can enter your Eircode on this and it will give you the closest pubs stocking it.

"As Non-alcoholic beers such as Guinness 0.0 cannot be poured via traditional beer lines and keg systems in pubs, this new cutting-edge technology finally makes it possible!"

Am I missing something,or why can't they be poured via traditional beer lines?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 5,838 Mod ✭✭✭✭irish_goat

Non-alcoholic beer has a risk of freezing in the lines.

Guinness are certainly not the first to have a specialist tap system though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 861 ✭✭✭Butson

    Tried this, overall thumbs up.

Don't think you are going to drink 8 or 9 pints on a night out, but perfect if you are driving or meeting some friends in a pub for a couple of hours and not drinking for whatever reason.

Maisel's Weisse is the best non alco beer IMO. It's identical to the real thing.

No one is going to install python and separate coolers for this

Heineken have been using a self contained counter top machine. Looks like absolute crap on a bar but it pours a fine pint. Can be used for alcoholic or non

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,177 ✭✭✭DenMan

Thomas Connolly's pub in Sligo have it on tap. Haven't tried it yet but saw it on their Facebook page.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,353 ✭✭✭radiospan

You sure it's on tap? Or is the can+surger contained in that somehow?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,423 ✭✭✭Gadgetman496

It's not on tap as we know it, it's a different system to the conventional draught.

Lot of tech gone into the pourer it seems. Won't pour if it is not a Guinness 0.0 can and if the can is too warm (which is a good thing and disadvantages the lazy/disorganised publican!). I wonder if there is a NFC tag or something similar in the can that would prevent any rival products being used in the pourer ala HP printers and their ink?

Yet to try this, will give it a go first time I see it. This video shows the pour system and also compares 0.0 to regular.

Spoiler alert: verdict is similar to opinion on this thread, acceptable substitute but not exactly the same.

This is out today in cans in Tesco 4 for four euro. Got some to retry it after my poor pub experience.

I'm giving it a 7 for effort. Better than the pub one I had. Still a sweet taste off the head and there is a non stout after taste. But overall I think a decent first effort at a zero alcohol stout. Which is really needed tbh to fill out the zero alcohol ranges .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,102 ✭✭✭Genghis

Thanks for the heads up listermint. Got the last 4 pack in Tesco's Kildare this afternoon.

Popped 2 in the fridge and sampled them after 4 hours chilling.

Must say I am impressed. Not quite the same as draught, but very decent at the same time. Compares really well to cans at home I feel. Compares very well to other AF choices.

Might be an 8 or maybe even a 9 out of 10 for me.

Will try a bar version when I see it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 74 ✭✭richsull

Bought a 4 pack today in Tesco and will try them out later. Going to 'extra chill' them first though as I like my beer/stout/ale cold (really liked the Guinness Extra Cold when it was selling). While I don't expect these to be exactly the same as the real thing, I'm hoping for a pleasant outcome. Cheers

Had a pint yest in a local

it was quite nice when first served cold chilled but as it warmed up over 30 mins or so there was definitely a sweet chocolate type of taste off it which I wasn’t mad about.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 861 ✭✭✭Butson

Bought 4 cans in Tesco last night.

Very impressed, thought they were delicious and very like the standard cans, but of a chocolate taste towards the end.

    Overall, excellent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,216 ✭✭✭✭listermint

Yes had two more last night.

You have to chill these . Make sure they are properly cold and maybe even your glass is cold. Otherwise they are simply not great .

Give them an 8 when cold cold.

Visited the local pub with it, Was driving so it was stopping on in for a quick drink.

Have to say it was great, All the other non alcohol stuff is shite but this I could drink on a night out if I had to drive after and feel part of the lads on the drink.

Very impressed just need to find it in the supermarket now.

Had one today, 6e for 4 in SV. Think it's excellent, as others have said too. I would have preferred if it was 0.5% as I find them to be a lot nicer than the 0% ones, the little bit of alc kind of takes the edge off the tomatoey fruity taste I often get from 0%ers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,055 ✭✭✭Pen Rua

Like many, picked it up in my Tesco - 4 cans for €6.

I find them ok - for me, there was some sort of syrupy sweetness to them.

I'm going to hold on to one to taste test between normal canned Guinness and maybe Beamish and or Murphys.

I'm really interested to try this... Rare to hear so much positivity about a product.

I saw a prominent Irish imam (Muslim cleric) retweeting it online and saying he was going to try it... Quite remarkable, you never think about how significant the difference between no alcohol and low alcohol might be to someone.

Just having it here. Really really impressed! Other non alcoholic beers haven't done anything for me. I'm not a regular Guinness drinker but do enjoy a pint of it and from a can this is at the very least comparable to their alcohol version.

Best non alcoholic beer I've tried, worth the wait!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 634 ✭✭✭ceekay74

Had a couple of cans earlier, chilled for 4 hours, I was really impressed. Can't wait to try a pint in the pub now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 74 ✭✭richsull

Well, tried out the cans (extra cold) and have to say I was quite impressed. Like other posters, I got a distinctly chocolate after-taste on finishing but nothing too distasteful. Will try them next in between some regular cans to see how they 'fit-in'. Exciting!

Would agree with listermint, probably best to chill the can AND the glass before you consume.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,216 ✭✭✭✭listermint

Also sold from cans. You shouldn't notice a difference.

Got 4 for €6 in SV last night - definitely better than I thought, certainly didn't taste bad, perfectly acceptable in my opinion. I noticed Fructose is listed on the ingredients which may explain the sweeter taste some people are getting. The head was creamy enough and stuck to the glass fairly well. Nice to be able to have a few without having a salty head on a Monday morning!

Ingredients also list "natural flavourings" which could be anything.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,404 ✭✭✭✭the beer revolu

At least there are ingredients listed.

Once there is alcohol in the product, there is no requirement to list ingredients. Regular Guinness could have any amount of natural or unnatural flavourings and we'd be none the wiser!

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,975 Mod ✭✭✭✭BeerNut

Although Diageo does list the ingredients, and made a marketing point of it by declaring Guinness now vegan-friendly once they took the isinglass out. All of Europe's big brewers have committed voluntarily to full ingredients listing on their beers by next year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,351 ✭✭✭Cloudio9

Like orange juice will it also say “made from concentrate”

or is that only export markets?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,975 Mod ✭✭✭✭BeerNut

Haha! I would definintely be in favour of high-gravity-brewed beer to be marked as such, but no, I don't think the Guinness label says that.
