Is a garage allowed to add a charge for part? The part was delayed so I phoned the main dealer store where they order it thinking i could order it and the garage fit it. The main dealer store quoted me x for the part

In the meantime the garage order part came in and they charged me y for the part. Difference of 40 euro? This is separate to labour. Receipt says part is y amount which is 40 euro more than the main dealer store quoted me. I understand it had to come from Germany, would there be extra charges because of that

Yes, any business is allowed to charge a margin on anything they supply. Profit equals cost price + markup.

Why should they sell it to you for what it cost them . Garages are there to make money .

i was only told on the phone by the main dealer store so i don't know if vat was included. the receipt said part xeuro, which was 40 euro, above the main dealer store price

the receipt also said labour y amount and then a vat% i think. i do not have the receipt with me now

Garages are in business to sell and fit parts, it's what they do. They probably got a discount off the main dealer price too!

you should have got a quote first off.

There's all sorts of reasons for the difference. Maybe the Main Dealer told you wrong price or you misheard. Maybe the car needed other bits. Maybe the garage had to go collect the parts.

If you're going to do that you have to go to them at the outset with the proposition that you want them to fit a part that you will supply and see if they will do it or not.

More likely to get an independent guy to do this

Garages with employees on salaries, maybe renting the site etc won't do you many favours in this regard.

No it is a store within a main dealer outlet. this garage that did the job for me is an independent garage not connected with the main dealer. But they had to get the part through the main dealer. Because it was delayed i rang the main dealer outlet myself and the price they quoted me ws 40 euro cheaper

it could have been a delivery charge, but more likely a markup. They are entitled to make a profit from doing business with you, they might spread the profit over a markup on the part, and the fitting charge.

Thread title had a really simple question with a really simple answer: yes, they are allowed charge whatever they want. If they want to charge €2,000 for a bulb that cost them 5c, they can do that too, just like any other business (with a handful of regulated exceptions). There's no legal mechanism to prevent McDonald's charging €50 for a quarter pounder, it's the open market that prevents that
