Building in Letterkenny

Hi,

My partner and I are hoping to settle down in Donegal. We both have jobs lined up there.

One of the attractions for Donegal is buying our own plot of land and building a house. However, I was told that they mandate 7 years’ residency in Donegal before we can build. This would mean that could not follow our dreams of building our home for 7 years and may put us off LK.

Is anybody aware of the regulations and is there any way that we can build sooner?

I would suggest that you get in touch with one of the ( Donegal) Councillors as they should be able to advise you.

I have not checked but I would think you should be able to get a list of Councillors from Donegal County Council web site.

Like every county in Ireland there will be restrictions on rural development (housing). There are probably less restrictions if applying for PP in an urban area. Not meaning to be harsh but you just cant decide to move to a rural area especially from another county and think that you will get PP to build a house there. Local Councillors may or may not be of assistance ... depends on who you get really. You could also talk to local estate agents / auctioneers who would not only offer advice on whats available to purchase but also advise on the rural area types as provided for in the County development plan. Ultimately you will need a planning agent though.
