    Interesting all right.

Especially in light of the forore about the hurlers not being allowed use McHale Park no one came back on here to discuss their historic reaching of a Christy Ring Final.

This day next week I'd say.

Because there is no need for a preliminary round the first round games will be held on 4th and 5th of June.

So that gives two weeks between draw and games.

“According to sources, it is very doubtful if Hennelly, Mullin or Flynn will be fit to start in the first-round qualifier clash.

As to how serious the O’Donoghue and Carr injuries are is unclear at this point.”

The additional injuries do not shock me. The standard of the strength and conditioning programme is not up to scratch and it's a massive elephant in the room at this stage, something a lot of people seem unwilling to talk about for whatever reason.

What do you think the issue is?

I thought we were one of the few leading the pack in terms of the S&C'ing work for years.

If anything, I think all the S&C, the crazy schedule on younger players and many a long season for the older players has just caught up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,198 ✭✭✭PressRun

S&C should be aiding in the prevention and recovery from injury.

Our injury list at the moment is only growing, and it's not just stuff like cruciates etc, it's repetitive soft tissue injuries too. It isn't a secret btw that the programme has dropped in quality, just that people don't seem to want to say it too loudly precisely because we've had this rep of being one of the best conditioned teams in the country. But there has been a drop in standards, and plenty of people who matter know it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,071 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

So call it out so and give details? What/who is the cause of the drop in standards?

You're talking about an elephant in the room but you're skirting around the issue as if there's an elephant in......

Who doesn't want to say it too loudly? Has something changed this year to make it worse? Don't think think the s&c team has changed since Horan came back, but this year is a complete outlier in terms of the volume of injuries.

Hennelly will play, had keyhole surgery on his knee about 8 weeks ago with a time to be back of 6 - 8 weeks.Flynn broke his ankle in league final and is ahead of schedule in comeback, cast came off 10 days ago and he didnt bother with the boot,he's in the gym and doing well but won't be in contention for first qualifier.

I don't know about Oisin or Paddy except Oisins didn't look good when it happened against Galway.

You can't blame the S&C for the majority of the injuries obtained in a match.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 820 ✭✭✭RedDevil55

It was also bad in 2018 when a different s&c guy was in charge. Go back further in 2013 David Clarke suffered a bad hamstring injury during the championship and Cillian dislocated his shoulder twice. @PressRun seems to be suggesting that something has changed in recent times, but I don't see what that could be?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,306 ✭✭✭spakman

The only change I know of is S&C was managed by Barry Solan but is now managed by Conor Finn. But I think there was an overlap between them when Solan was with Arsenal etc

The players were talking up the S&C team earlier in the year as well

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,892 ✭✭✭HBC08

I think you might be quoting the wrong post.

I'd never say blame the S and C

Looking at the injury list we could really do with a soft draw.....are Cork in the hat with us?

They have a couple of handy forwards so surely any team we could put out would be enough

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,581 ✭✭✭MacDanger

In terms of strongest to weakest possible opponents in the draw, I'd have it like this:

    Tyrone

    Monaghan

    Armagh

    Clare

    Louth / Cork / Meath

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29 Arkiema

Christ no wonder there’s no updates coming from Management or the panel, they don’t want to depress us week in week out.

re S&C I don’t buy this notion that it’s substandard, watch Lee’s MOTM interview with Sky last year after beating the Dubs and he pin points Conor Finn and the S&C team for getting them in such good shape.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,463 ✭✭✭✭km79

I’d have Armagh and maybe Monaghan ahead of Tyrone

Ideally avoid any of the 3

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,085 ✭✭✭flasher0030

I know its pessimistic, but if we draw any of those top 3, I think its season over. Any of the others, and we get a stay of execution.

Lads,I get the pessimism especially with all the injuries and after the galway game but what I'm hearing from inside the squad is that there's massive competition at training, great belief and morale is very good.

Give me a wounded, written off Mayo team any day of the week.

I'd like to avoid Armagh especially if we play them away, they would be confident against us and we only bet them by a point in the qualifiers in 2019.

I'd happily take Tyrone in the next game.

So apparently a player (seems to be Michael Plunkett ) has broken his leg in A Vs B game and his season is over

i just don’t know what to say anymore

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,708 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

Bad luck more than an S&C issue IMO

Feel sorry for him, he was having a decent season

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,332 ✭✭✭✭Fr Tod Umptious

That's is just such bad news.

Primarily for Michael Plunkett obviously but it's just one more cog gone from the Mayo wheel.

The team that next takes the field could be missing Mullin, Durkan, Plunkett, Flynn and Conroy.

That one third of your original planned starters.

No team can be competitive with that sort of attrition.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,099 ✭✭✭Barlett

A season that started with a lot of promise has fairly flatlined, would be great to be wrong but at this stage I find it difficult to believe we won't encounter a few more injuries the longer the season goes on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,581 ✭✭✭MacDanger

Good luck to the hurlers today in Croke Park. Hard to see us getting a result realistically but getting this far is an achievement all the same

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 617 ✭✭✭franklyon

Monaghan it is then, home advantage too, dont know if thats a blessing or a curse at this stage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,662 ✭✭✭Blackjack

Can't see us coming out of it with a result, given all our injuries.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,581 ✭✭✭MacDanger

Tough aul draw. A lot will depend on how many we have back from injury

Have we ever played Monaghan in championship before?

A tough draw is probably for the best. If we're not good enough with the injury list (most seem medium-long term) then a good break this year mightn't be the worst thing rather than prolonging it.
