New heating system

Getting new system on with 2 heating zones and one for hot water. Used to use immersion on timer during summer months. Which is more economical for hot water during the summer? Oil or ESB? We used to not get oil during summer but now have the option of heating water only with oil. We have 2 showers that run off the mains. Electrician removed old immersion timer, without my knowledge so need to know whether to get it fitted back again ASAP.

There have been lots of discussions on this over the years. I think the general consensus is that for just heating the cylinder, that there is very little between the cost. I use the oil myself and am happy with that. The often unforeseen benefit of using the boiler is that it keeps it ticking over during what is an otherwise dormant season for it.

As Wearb says very little difference in cost. If heating full cylinder then Oil or gas will be a little cheaper in the summer. Heating a small amount of water like using the sink button then the immersion is slightly cheaper. We aren't talking life altering amounts of money being saved one way or another

Electricity is approximately 20c/kwh and oil is 10c/kwh then is it not 50% cheaper to use oil to heat the water than electricity.

No, not for short durations. There are more losses with oil, which spread out over many hours isnt much, but over short periods, is more significant.

Oil is 10c/kwH but isn't as efficient, to be fair modern condensing boilers are pretty efficient but there are loses, in boiler itself and in pipework. Also with oil that will heat the coil which will heat most of the tank, which can lead to losses as you may not use all the water.

Electricity, people will often just use on sink so only heat top part of tank, its plenty enough for 1 or 2 showers, so heating less means costs less. If night rate is an option it changes the equation also.

    In summary, It depends.
