Taking over as carer

    Hi,

I was wondering if taking over as carer for someone in the event of the previous carers death end up with a quicker decision?

I was told to fill out the regular carers form but I had assumed due to the circumstances it would of been a quicker process.

Any help would be appreciated, especially if someone has first hand experience of this.

    Thanks

Tough one John and I can appreciate a difficult time.

Assuming the department has officially been notified of the carer's death (this may be crucial) my thoughts are as follows, others might have similar experience they can share.

Honestly I doubt there is a specific mechanism to speed up the application process but might suggest it would be worth seeing if you could have, if possible the GP/communiity nurse, whomever is monitoring the person requiring care medical needs , to write a note about the situation to the Department as they would have direct access via HSE, also add a note from the applicant and add to application this may get it prioritised.

OBVIOUSLY, GP won't share direct info with applicant but can make recommendations to the Department on behalf of their patient.

You've already mentioned the situation on the phone call so hopefully there will be note's on the file and all together expedite a decision. If and when approved, any payment should be back dated from date of application. The more info submitted with application the better.

    Good luck regardless!

Thanks very much for the reply, just a quick update on this..

I received a letter from my local office saying my last Jobseekers payment will be on 5/11/2021 since Im caring for someone and not available for work.

This date strikes me as very odd for the last Jobseekers payment since its so far away.

Also in the envelope was a form to apply for SWA while waiting on a decision.

Im almost certain the date is wrong but cant get an answer from my local office

Hi, it does look like there's an error in dates. I'd expect you to lose a jobseekers payment if as they say your no longer available for work and required to apply for SWA in the interim.

I'm assuming you've now submitted the carer's allowance request.

My only advice would be to perhaps send an email, are you using a mywelfare account? Details are in there somewhere. You need to make sure you don't suddenly lose income whilst awaiting a decision on carer"s allowance because I'd be surprised if they'll continue JSA up to November and if it would take that long for a decision.

Hi thanks very much for the response again.

I have indeed applied and they rejected me already.. it says claim disallowed on my welfare with a letter on the way.

I just don't understand what the logic could possibly be since he needed a carer before the death so why not now?

I foolishly assumed under the circumstances they'd make life a little bit easier for once.

I'm not sure where this leaves me now since the local office say I'm not entitled to jobseekers and the carers have turned me down.

Gosh that's Harsh, do you a direct link to the person requiring care? (although I don't believe that is relevant) I'm not fully up on carer's allowance and criteria or if there is an appeals process. What's important is to try and clarify if your JSA is still active, in essence you could argue lack of understanding on this entire process.

I hope someone with a better understanding of carer's allowance might be able to offer better advice on what next to do.

I've just checked and there is an appeals process.

I'm assuming you followed fully the application process which also includes a section filled out by GP?

I belive if there is an issue with your JSA payment, you can apply for SWA in the interim until appeals of the decision is processed
