I'm plagued with them the last week. What's the objective?

It's probably to get you to call a number disguised as an Irish one, and then you're charged for it.

This time they seem to be spoofing Irish Mobile numbers, have called them back twice via a VOIP service and it sounds like the number doesn't exists and just gets disconnected without being charged.

That's weird so. At least the Revenue and Garda ones seem to have stopped.

The last call I received, a few weeks ago, I answered, didn't say anything and just straight away put them on hold. They hung up and never rang me again.

I, personally, have managed to avoid all this “nonsense” by never answering calls from private numbers or ones I don’t recognise.

I’ve no time for “time burglars” of any sort be they on the phone or to my door. My time is far too important to me to be wasted engaging with charlatans and others of their “ilk”.

I think it was the case that when you spoke it triggered an automatic recording.

I got a new SIM a few months ago. I only use it for data so nobody has the number, but I'm plagued with calls from numbers with the same prefix and same first 3 digits.

The ones I got, all the calls were from numbers in the 089 427 3xxx range, so easy to spot as spoofed. They're robo-dialing random numbers, they don't know in advance if the number is even valid, never mind who's behind it.

I had three messages left on my phone from a robotic voice looking for my PPS number and telling me they were going to seize my non existent assets.

They seem to have eased off a bit in the last fortnight, well for me at least.

I just got one call from a disgruntled farmer looking for his tractor.

I never answer an unknown number,if it's actually important they have the voicemail to let me know!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,119 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

I got them for about two weeks, but used an app to block them.

Seem to have stopped now. Might be related to some internet DNS outage recently that took them off line.

Unfortunately there are often valid reason to need to take calls from unknown or private numbers.

These robo calls though are dumb. There's usually a pattern to the number you can block thankfully.

I had reason to answer calls , and as I noticed with WFH many genuine people are calling from their personal number while their office is closed. I noticed0

Yep, got a few of these calls the past two weeks - from a UK number every time.

I just ignore the calls and they don't leave a message.

Good telltale sign that its a scammer is that the first 4/5 numbers will match your own number which is usually a good indicator to ignore the call.

    Pain in the hole though.

Got a call from 049 Nr just now, hung up just as I answered, anyone else getting calls from this Nr?

It's actually utterly pointless blocking them or publishing them online. They basically just send fake numbers, as the telephone networks just allow them to pass anything as Caller ID information. It's not verified in any way.

They just set their phone number to 087 234 XXXX and that could be someone's genuine number. That ends up being reported to spam lists or published on websites and then it just creates two victims - one gets the spam call, the other is the victim of having their number mimicked.

I've already had calls from people claiming they've been called from my phone number.

If you get them, just hang up and if it's a malformed number e.g. I got calls from 088 XXX XXXX which hasn't been a number range since the 1990s, just don't answer at all.

I'm actually considering changing back to Android again from iOS because of this. I'm finding Apple's call filtering options, even with 3rd party plug ins is vastly inferior to Android.
