Very large bird

Yesterday afternoon I noticed a very large bird in the sky. It was being followed by a flock of crows for a while but it eventually lost them when it went higher and higher. It had a meandering sort of flight pattern, with very little flapping of wings. I have seen buzzards before and they often circle in groups of 2 or 3 and emit that recognisable screech..so I don't think this was one.

I didn't hear a call, and I couldn't see any markings as it was such a bright day. I couldn't estimate the wing span but can say that it was very very large. I could see it in the sky for a very long time as it gradually disappeared into the distance. It was quite a spectacle! Any idea what it was?

I’d say a buzzard. I often see them singly. They don’t always cry out. You could watch them for ages circling and going higher with seemingly little effort.

Buzzards are fairly big but not exceptional. The ones we have around are bigger than crows but there isn't a lot in it.

There was a white tail eagle spotted in the midlands during the week.

i'd suspect a kite if you think it was bigger than a buzzard. the forked tail is usually the easiest way of distinguishing them. kites would be most common around wicklow/dublin/meath in ireland, and i think down and antrim up north.
