The Sun Shelter was destroyed by the easterly gales of Storm Emma in March of 2018, along with much of the anti-erosion rock at the back of the East Pier.

In the interim, the heavily indebted Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company was abolished and harbour administration folded into the County Council. The Council have been cleaning up the balance sheet since, and prioritising works with the greatest urgency and safety impact, notably remedial work to the Carlisle Pier and restoring the anti-erosion elements behind the pier.

The plan is to restore the Bandstand to make it more resilient to harsher weather and construct a new roof for the Sun Shelter that respects the Victorian design but is engineered to modern standards to avoid being wrecked again. There isn't a firm timeline on it.

if they cared about Victorian design they wouldn’t have filled in one of the few Victorian sea baths in the country
