I doubt the school authorities cared what was going as long as:

    a) they won the Leinster Schools Cup

    b) pupils achieved top grades

    c) fees were paid

Yes there's an air here too of the parents not giving a damn about their kids and clearly would have heard rumours of the goings on directly or indirectly but were happy to pay their £10k a year to offload their kids while they fooked off for extended stays to the Pyrenees skiing during the Winter and Marbella during the Spring.

Down to 5th most listened daily programme and 10th overall. No doubt its performance related and he'll take a hefty wage cut next time out.

D'Arcy an even bigger waste at well under 200k listeners.

Most definitely alcohol & substance addictions are an all-too-common result of abuse when a child. Boarding schools were breeding grounds for much that went on, but as we heard clerics invaded family homes and were trusted to take children back home with them, through tidy gained by grooming the parents.

My mother was considering sending me to boarding school for socialisation as I was an only child, my father was very dubious about it and consulted a priest who was a close friend (non abuser!) about it. He said boarding schools can be unsafe places for children and advised against it. That was the 1960s. In the 1920s my grandparents were aware of the potential for children being abused, and my mother and her siblings were advised never to entertain talk from men unless in the company of parents & the aunts, they were told most me were good and would understand that they weren’t being rude.

However one day the two sisters were walking didn’t Morehampton Road, chattering as Gaeilge and this friendly man with a top hat and moustache stopped them to ask a question in Irish. They politely told him to sod off, turned out to be Douglas Hyde. And the parents said they could make an exception of greeting Mr Hyde!

My mother still talks about having to run the gauntlet to get past Patrick Kavanagh on her way to/from school. He was a dirty old man you did not want to get too close to and would shout inappropriate comments at young ladies.

I was going to be sent to Synge Street, but my mother thought it would be too rough for me!

One of the callers today mentioned Bob Geldof, who had an interesting time in Blackrock both as a boarder and day attendee.

In "Is that It?" he name checks at least one of the abusers, Fr Flood in an amusing ancecdote about analysing the lyrics of an ole 1920's blues song called 'Shave me dry'. He also mentions another classmate who was a Rugby star and had a run in with some of the teachers. He went on to become a doctor but committed suicide in a hotel room in Dun Laoghaire some years later. One would wonder could it have been anything to do with the abuse he may have suffered in Blackrock?

A friend of mine was a boarder and had a run in with a priest. He told the priest to f off. A few weeks later (after he thought the issue had been forgotten about) his father arrived. He thought de father was in Dublin on business and was calling into say hello. But no, the priest had him expelled and his father summoned to collect him. ~50 years later when he would tell the story you should hear the hatred in his voice for the priest. He never said what the original run in was about.
