On android and chrome, terrible load/render times and the random scrolling brings me strange places on thread I'm frequently visiting

I'm getting that on Android and Brave, and I'm sick of correcting all the random upper and lower case jumble of letters at the start of a post.

Great! I have checked a few of the other larger threads and page 1 of all seem to be working here too! Thanks for that!

I am getting 503 service unavailable messages all over the place at the moment. Refreshing page a few times seems to work, and it's entirely hit and miss as to whether it will happen on each click.

503s, and I even got one trying to thank the first post here that mentioned it.

It’s like the good old days of vbulletin with all the issues 😂

Yeah 503s left, right and centre.

Boards is in danger of being no more within 3 MONTHS unless subscription numbers increase drastically.

Vanilla Dev are working on this right now as high priority. There are a number of causes to this issue that they are resolving as we speak.

Your websites completely broken, please fix the 503 errors before you draw away more people from an already dwindling user base.

The search results page I get on my mobile is different from the one it says you get in the 'How can I? A user's guide to the new site' post in this subforum

    It says:

"The results page will show results for 'All' by default but you can filter the results by the options at the top of the page - Discussions - Places - Events - Members. The forums that match your search will be listed where the red arrow is"

But these options dont appear at all

Why is there no "search this forum" option in forums or a "search this thread" option?

I want to see if there's any talk of Rewind festival thats coming up in early june in the gigs and events forum but when I put "rewind" in search I get results from the entire site with not even an option to filter between threads where a word is mentioned and individual replies to a thread which would vastly narrow down a user's search results

Is there any update as to whether we're going to get the star bookmark link back on desktop @Boards.ie: Mike ?

    Hey dulpit,

This request is still queued with a third party developer as is part of the custom theme. I will check in on it's progress now.

I don't mean this as a harsh criticism or gripe, but I do find it concerning that you need to rely on third-party devs for the custom theme. I think that in itself might be reason to look at a more vanilla (pun not intended!) theme that doesn't need as much work.

  • Administrators, Boards.ie Employee, Boards Employee 2, Boards Employee 3 Posts: 1,555 ✭✭✭✭✭Boards.ie: Mike

I wish we didn't have to rely on 3rd party development but I do not have the skills or qualifications to do that site development work myself. The decision to employ custom themes was made pre-migration in an effort to keep things as normal as possible and to maintain the look and feel of the site that everyone loves. I will admit that it is plain to see this has and does cause issues regularly. Some are quick fixes and some are certainly not. Ultimately it is not my decision to make. It is not the first time this suggestion has come up and there have been talks with Vanilla , a lot recently, to make improvements for the site going forward.

It is such a great resource and outlet for users and it is Boards.ie's intention for this to be the case for a long time to come. Comments and ideas have been shared on other threads on how we can improve user experience going forward and an overall plan is being put together.

I said this on the recent Feedback thread, use the default Vanilla settings and make life easier all round.

Every Vanilla update sends one of the Boards customisation askew, we all know it's not Vbulletin so just strip it back to a site that functions.

We'll all grumble of course, but we'll get used to it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 31,956 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

I definitely think there's a growing feeling among boards users for this. It'd be like ripping off a plaster - painful initially but worth it in the end.

The constant glitches/outages/quirks/breakdowns of the customised version of Vanilla are a total PITA - every time you fix one thing it seems to break two more - I reckon if you held a poll there would be an overwhelming vote for just using Vanilla as it is intended, and we'll all get used to it.

I'm sure Mike would be relieved too, he logs in to pages of us all pointing out what's not working, raises that with Vanilla and they fix it, then we're all back pointing out what fault that fix kicked off.

Doing the same thing over and over when we all know what the result will be. Time to draw a line in the sand and move on.
