Is there a plan in the long(er) term to try and match the mobile and desktop sites?

They're like two completely different forums at the moment - when I switch from one to the other (which I do regularly, I'd used them both about 50/50) it takes me a while to reorientate. It's kind of head-wrecking!

Also, can you make it obvious when you've thanked a post, and allow us to see who thankex posts on mobile?

I often unthank a post I've forgotten I've thanked already and have to thank it again. It's getting annoying. 😒 🙄

Mobile navigation is being worked on - that will allow us to offer more ways to access content via menus. It wont be exactly the same as desktop but the functionality will be same.

First route is get navigation into menu... + My Forums... we submitted another PR for that to fix some issues. We will also offer a different view for posts - card or ordinary.

and desktop. We changing back to thanks (we don't like likes either!). Also we will look at treatment for how we display 'Thanks' to be more like before on desktop - we will see how to treat on mobile too.

This reply sums up why the site will die I think.

Did you not consider any of these things before going live? Do a little bit of testing maybe? These are not nice to haves, these are essential elements of such a site / business. You are basically telling us yes I know, but fcuk the mobile is even worse. We know that too. Escalated or work in progress is not really an adequate answer. "Being worked on" but people have been pointing out since day one that what you have now is not a functional website.

What do you think of traffic / post numbers on the new site?

Have you considered that maybe it is time to roll back to the old version and launch a final product, not some beta test prepared by a transition year developer in on work experience? Going on way too long, as you would say yourself

Must have missed that part of the thread were it turned into an AMA.

    Hi @ Odhran,

Am beginning to get back to posting again but find I am unable to ...

Remove quoted text , delete posts or highlight areas I want to quote . Haven't got much further than that tbh as finding this difficult.

    Delete drafts .

See who has thanked posts without thanking or removing thanks , only see a few" thankers" when obviously more on some posts .

I don't know what the points are on my profile?

I had more stars on my profile before as posting a while now , but don't know what they mean , and was never bothered before so , why am I bovvered now ? 😚

    Thanks for trying .

Help keep Boards going , subscribe or donate if you can.

It's not, the lad comes in and posts here after his dinner telling us that they are working on it - 12 days after launch and they haven't found someone who can make a drop down yet

It's not really an AMA. It's a user asking questions when so many relevant questions are going unanswered elsewhere. This is very much on topic. As should the results of this ongoing poll:

It's about time apologies were extended to everyone who's having such a crappy time using a place that was a sort of online home. Now's not the time? We're pushing towards 4 weeks since a community built by others was turned on its head by folks who are dodging criticism that's fairly levelled at them.

What's with all the snide responses? People are asking genuine questions and trying to figure things out now that the site is noticeably less user friendly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,325 ✭✭✭iLikeWaffles

Which snide responses were a reply to genuine questions? All statements...

I'm starting to think this is an alt account of someone connected to the site. You're strangely defensive of the site and dismissive of anyone criticising it or struggling with the changes.

Just two things really annoying me which need to be fixed soon.

    1) At the moment I have to go to search and enter my username and then sort by newest to see all my posts

    2) I cannot see any updates of threads I follow.

These two issues need to be sorted and quick.

Only account I have or need. You're strangely defensive of someone else's post criticising criticism that is in no way constructive.

Plan better and manage releases... A bit late for that I'd say 🙃

I definitely find myself using boards far less but sure that's probably a good thing for me. Once the football kicks off again I'll try find my way around

Can I ask why this is? Like if you knew it was this bad to use then why did you okay it to go live? None of this makes sense. The whole thing is a disaster. You keep saying things didn’t migrate over so is that tech speak for vanilla didn’t produce what you had in mind?

No, it's management speak for "The migration was happening one way or the other and sure we can just do what everyone else does, saving ourselves a bag of money and lots of time, by just moving on with it and letting our users do the testing for us. Then we'll scramble and spin our way out of it".

    That's what's happening here.

Ah, if I had to guess I’d say the crowd at Boards.ie were shown all the “bells and whistles” by the Vanilla crew. Told them how it was going to go, did a few demos and said it all looked good.

It’s fairly common whenever a company buys into a new “system”, you get a rake of square pegs getting jammed into round holes. The bigger problems will get sorted, the smaller ones will take time and the “finicky” ones never get, fully, addressed.

In time, the majority of, more normal, users won’t even notice but there might still be some banging the drum, calling for heads to “roll” and more explanations to be given. But everyone else will have “moved on”.

    'More normal, users', Emmet?

You mean those who don't care that a data controller entrusted with their personal data has breached their statutory obligations and requirements to ensure compliance and transferred that data to a third country, thereby distancing a data processor and the sub-processors further from the protective and judiciary mechanisms available to an average person to take action in the event of a data breach and disclosure?

You mean a user who's not happy that they can no longer delete Private Messages? I deleted all of mine in advance of the migration, but there are many there now which have made it through in the migration. The means to delete this has been taken away - The new Vanilla platform doesn't give me any way to purge these private messages. Private messages. Not 'discussions'. Totally unacceptable.

You mean a user who may have an extensive list of posts in fora not open to the average user-base here, containing particularly sensitive and personal information, who should no longer have confidence that the content of those posts is secured during or after their departure from Boards? It's all in Canada now. It's all outside of Ireland, outside of the EU, outside of reach of anyone to actually take action and purge these records now that control has been handed to an external DB owner, application owner, hosting provider and datacenter operators.

Canada being a third country means nothing to the average user, except when redress is sought. It's by no means as simple to seek and secure the enforcement of a judicial order in this case. Were our data to still reside in Ireland, this is all but assured. Not now. Totally unacceptable.

Let's be blunt about this. The technical ineptitude shown thus far in relation to the basic migration of the platform, the obvious lack of effort in evaluating the suitability of the platform or any degree of actual readiness for migration, none of these things should give anyone ANY sense of confidence that their personal data at this point is going to be afforded the safeguards and protections each and every person is legally entitled to under EU law. This is all about suiting the business which owns boards, while they erode some of the protections which were available to you (even if you didn't want them) or me (and I most certainly did), without giving me the ability to decline, instead to delete my data and close my account before my personal data was exported. Totally unacceptable stuff.

The great unwashed who thinks "It's free, what are you moaning about?" might be fine waiting for things to settle down, biding their time and thinking that everything will be grand. But it's not grand. It's not okay at all.

But you go on sticking your head in the sand. Let everyone else pay attention and decide for themselves.

Maybe you should work on it in a sandbox/dev environment and test it to make sure it is working before making it live. Pretend you are professionals.
