    Aside from fuel, wages will be the biggest cost, any way to reduce them even further will be jumped on.
    I suppose you could argue it being a safety thing too, less people on board means less risk.

    Interestingly, with the advent of autonomous road vehicles, this supposition is being challenged as somewhat of a fallacy. Humans around the world annually make billions (trillions?) of decisions when driving vehicles and have an incredibly high success rate. AI's rate of success is much lower than that and while we expect it to improve, there is no guarantee it will better human levels. Time will tell.

    Not so for a ship thought. There's also no need for.ships.to be fully autonomous. One person could remotely control lots of shop (similarly to air traffic control) for large parts of their journeys due to relatively low speeds and relatively large bodies of water. For more complex sections, a person could control just one ship and crews could be in board wherever manoeuvring / coming along side is needed

    You could take control of the ship and send a virtual ship on its way . The cargo would be well gone before anyone would know .
