Clegg Impact Hammer for simple building foundations

Has anyone here ever used athe Clegg impact Hammer and did you find it useful for estimating soil density, strength or ultimately bearing capacity for simple construction - say bungalow or two storey house. Failing that there used to be a simple peg test but i cant recall the details from the dark past.
