How true to life is your Boards.ie persona?

I like this Oscar Wilde quote; "Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth." When you consider the internet, this quote almost seems prescient. I'm wondering how true to your 'real-life' self is your Boards.ie persona. Is it the same, or is it a more irreverent version of yourself? Would the mods be as assertive in real life situations as they can be on this site? There are a few wind up merchants around here too, would they be so antagonistic in real life?

Almost identical, with an extra helping of irreverence in AH. By and large, what you see is what you get. Those who sport more than one mask on boards are cowards. That is all.

    87% true to life.

Interesting question, but it's not so direct to answer. People will always see themselves in a better light than what they are. Be it on the internet or in real life. A rude and abrasive person, for example, can view himself as just a 'straight-shooter' while everyone else would beg to differ.

As for mods being so assertive in the real world?
They wouldn't because they couldn't. People would tell them to f-off and say who do you think you are etc.

This is the internet. Anyone can come off as anyway they like without any repercussions.

I think pretty much as close to possible though I can't be objective. I like cats a lot more than my posting here would suggest though.

True to myself, just ever so slightly more argumentative here at times. :p

The character accounts and spoofers are usually very obvious, the rest generally trip themselves up eventually. I'll never understand the insecurity or inferiority complex that compels someone to create an online persona, it's actually quite pitiful.

100% accurate. You can probably figure out where I live from what I have posted here.

This is nothing like my real persona.

I'm way more scathing in real life. There are no infractions and thread bans in real life.

    100% true.
I'm as much of an arse here as I am in reality

Fairly accurate. Every so slightly more evil in person.

While there are, certainly, a few, of what I would call “sound skins” on here I would, sincerely, hope that a number of posters are not like their personas here.

There are a number of very “negative”, angry, posters who spend their days whinging about travellers, RTÉ, Covid restrictions, The Late Late Show, Dr Tony, people of colour, Noel King, WOKE (all caps) and a number of other topics that seem to constantly boil their piss.

This cannot be good for ones mental health. Maybe it’s just a way for them to deal with their own “shortcomings” in real life but the levels of nastiness, and spite, have them coming across as deranged oddballs.

As for me, well, my winning personality comes across in person the same as on here. Just a shame my good looks are restricted to the “real world” ;)

Same, but I think I come across more aggressive in text.

There was an almost identical thread in March OP.
Just an FYI if you're interested in replies there.

I do most of the above, and dole scroungers and antivax people to boot too.

I also do it offline too!

I am different on here than in real life.

You have to be careful about what you say on here. It's easy to get vilified, lambasted or banned if you say the wrong thing on boards. If I was having a beer with someone I know well I'd feel more free to mention certain things whereas on here you'd get someone taking it the wrong way very easily because you're only communicating via text.

I think as well there's a lot of argumentative bastids on here who are just itching to have a go at someone and no matter how careful you are you'll still get one latching on now and then

Pretty much the same. I'm probably a little less serious, and easygoing in RL. But I'd express the same opinions offline as I would here.

Is that user Pighead still active? Always spoke in the third person about himself. I always wondered what kind of character that individual was away from the keyboard.

I'm sleepy. That has nothing got to do with who I am. I just wanted to express my feelings.
In fact I'm so damn sleepy it feels like no amount would help. In two hours I'll be in bed.

I don't have enough posts to have a persona.

    Maybe I never will.

Based on this post I'd say you have low self-esteem and are pessimistic? Does that sound like you in real life?

I’m absolutely the same. I’ve never said anything here I wouldn’t say in real life. I don’t lie I don’t play games. Couldn’t be arsed making up stories. What you get is what you see.

In real life, I'd be quite humorous. I love Dad jokes, especially as my adult kids never tire of groaning at me.

I'm a bit garrulous in real life as well, and sometimes I can lose the run of myself on boards as well. A recent post of mine epitomises this. Caused chaos and confusion :eek::eek::pac:

All in all, I'm live and let live and I hope I come across that way on here as well.

I really couldn't give a curse about what anonymous blowhard posters on sites like this think of me, but do appreciate a warm compliment in real life.

A lot of the things I bitch, whinge and moan about on here actually don't occur a lot in my day to day life.

Well I suppose I see this forum as being "for" discussion and debate. So that is how I present myself on it. But I would not be going looking for that in real life. It is a bit like how the jujitsu mat for me is a place to go for fighting - but I do not go around in real life wanting or looking for a fight.

So I suppose I come across as entirely different as a persona on here that I would in real life for that reason.

Outside work - which is generally the only place I find time to get to use boards anyway - I pretty much fill every waking minute of my time without stopping so I am more often doing than discussing. I have become quite driven and simply do not stop from dawn till dark when I finally pass out.

Well I. It is a bit like how the jujitsu mat for me .

For me, it looks more like a playpen at times, with a bunch of angry recalcetrant toddlers whining and crying.

Hah I thought you meant the jujitsu mat for a moment there and I was thinking "That does not describe a single martial arts school I have ever been in" :)

And then I realised you meant boards.

But I guess I see what you mean. I recently posted in a thread on the subject of blindboy due to my curiosity being raised by an opinion piece in the Indo. The series of mini tantrums my not being on the bandwagon of blindboy hate caused was pretty toddler like and whingey for sure. But was fun to watch them all go running because they could not rebut a single point I made.

But there is enough measured and calm and interesting people with some level of self awareness and empathy and intelligence to make it worth coming back occasionally all the same. And a few users are consistently informative and educational. Which is probably why I am more stand offish and debate driven on boards than in real life. Because doing so often stimulates responses that benefit me in the long run. If I push - then they have to push back - and I ultimately benefit from that one way or another.

I'm pretty much as big a bollocks online as anywhere else, it doesn't really make any difference.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,770 ✭✭✭✭RobertKK

I am who I am at the present time, no point trying to be someone else and having to keep some fake image up.

But that said, I am not the same person as I was when I joined as things change, views change and its a part of growing as a human.
So I would probably be embarrassed by some of the stuff I said or maybe even believed in the past, but I do give my views as they are currently, and try to portray my personality while doing so.

Having met people from the site the feedback I've gotten is conflicting; one poster told me he thought I'd be cooler.

Another told me he didn't think I'd be so sound. And when we met again that he'd forgotten he thought I was sound.

So I guess my online persona is simultaneously cooler and less sound than my real life one which I guess evens out.

Comebacks and one liners and good points based on details are a whole lot easier when youre sitting down quietly and have 5 mins to think them out.

So some of the things i say online would never happen in real life. Probably goes for a lot of people.

I think 'wit of the stairs is the term'.
Normally id just mumble something or just say 'shut up, thats why'.

Also the things i might seem to care about on here i probably couldnt give a shyte about irl. And vice versa.

I lose interest in real life topics of conversation much quicker irl than if im online

I thought you were sound anyway.

I don't pretend to be something I'm not on boards and couldn't care less if some stranger online doesn't like it.

I like fishing, hunting, shooting, good food, good drink, good conversation and good company. In real life I wouldn't tolerate the fools so gladly.

You are asking me do people perceive me as the same in real life as on boards.

That is impossible for me to answer as I really don't know how you all perceive me on boards.

And different people perceive us all as different.

I am probably different with different people too.

Who i am though ..is me ...not what people think i am. I'm not your preceptions or thoughts about me. Im just myself.
