First up David Ike when he was known as the guy who read the sports results on BBC rather than the loon who claims the world is run by shape shifting lizards from outer space.

Martin Bashir ..... a BAFTA winning interview programme, until it wasn't.

Roy Greenslade: Former Guardian columnist and former Professor of Journalism. Turns out he was a member of the Provisional IRA and SF for much of his career, while never revealing that. Revealed recently, and one of his nastiest pieces involved trying to minimise the rape of a 16 year old girl because it was someone very very close to Gerry Adams who brutalised her.

I think the only way to become famous in the world of journalism is to lose your integrity

IIRC George Lee used to be respected before his foray into politics and subsequent return as hurricane correspondent.

Also, Pat Kenny? Before taking over from Gay Byrne on the LLS, before his run ins with his neighbours and before he earned SIX HUNDRED TOUSAND POWEND A YEAR- for eleven hours jobs!

People are getting outraged over Martin Bashir now, but it's long been known he's a backstabbing rat. He's responsible for the farcical 2005, that never should have been. That broke Michael Jackson, and ultimately led to his death. Martin has blood on his hands.

ABC NEWS Martin Bashir confessed he lied in Living with Michael Jackson

    https://youtube.com/watch?v=Prm2n9HVMRA

The Michael Jackson Estate are suing HBO, it's been going on for a couple of years. That's going to arbitration, as they've won this round.

    https://news.sky.com/story/michael-jackson-estate-can-take-private-action-against-hbo-over-leaving-neverland-documentary-12161778

Tom Mesereau has joined the Estate as special counsel. He's confident they will win. Which will hopefully mean Dan Reed is exposed and join Martin Bashir, in having no future career.

Revealed recently, and one of his nastiest pieces involved trying to minimise the rape of a 16 year old girl because it was someone very very close to Gerry Adams who brutalised her.

    So many lies here.

For one, he was not a member of the Provisional IRA. Secondly, I do not believe he was a member of SF. Thirdly, he did not try to minimise the rape of anyone. He said that a TV show had a lack of political balance, particularly in light of Maria Cahill's virulent opposition not only to Sinn Féin (understandable) but the Good Friday Agreement itself, given her own membership of a dissident republican group. Fourthly, there is no evidence that Martin Morris is or was someone who was "very very close to Gerry Adams". "Very very close" suggests that he was some part of Adams's inner circle or something like that, which was not the case. Presumably though, he knew him.

The Maria Cahill episode is bad and damning enough to the provos without exaggerating it.

Greenslade was and is a good journalist. He has lost the respect of some because he did not disclose that he supported the IRA (like many), wrote for An Phoblacht (SF's newspaper) and did not disclose this to employers. He was a sympathiser, not a member of the IRA.

Author of his own demise. Also author of some terrible articles in his post-Irish Times years. His Irishman's Diary column was occasionally quite good, albeit ruined by increasingly frequent outbursts like the 'Bastards' one that ultimately got him sacked. Good riddance to him.

Most journalism now is garbage. Far too much of it is clickbait, opinion pieces and biased. Rare to see really good quality investigative journalism these days. I would say the likes of Vice still produce some great stuff but most mainstream media, be it in Ireland, UK or US is very poor.

And yet, even with Bashir having no journalistic integrity, Jackson still managed to hang himself in ‘Living With Michael Jackson’. It can’t all be blamed on Bashir, I’m afraid. Jackson was a big boy and said things in that documentary that made him look very bad.

Top quality investigative journalism has been on life support for years if not decades. It doesn't exist in Ireland.

You'll get occasional big stories but a lot of these land on journalists desks rather than the journalists desks.

An example being the FAI story last year. I'm not slagging the journalists off in this particular case but it literally landed on his desk.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,810 ✭✭✭✭Water John

No media is willing to put in the resources to major investigative journalism. Journalists cannot be blamed for that. Individual journalists are responsible for their own integrity. Paul Reynolds is a classic example of someone who as expected to be balanced but when the spotlight came on was found to be very wanting.

To be fair while they pile on Cal a bit at least he gets to speak his mind. Imagine Matt giving 10 minutes a week to an Irish version of Cal.....in fact is there even anybody conservative left in Irish media that could do the slot? Niall Boylan or Ian O'Doherty perhaps? I've not seen O'Doherty on air since he argued with Liam Cunningham about the Cologne rapes.
