I was at Self Aid, great day out. The Pogues were on fire. Was at the Stones gig too. Another great concert.

I was too young to go but I remember my older cousins went as it was "great value" gig.



The Pogues and The Chieftans were given afternoon slots. For phucks sake.

At least Brush Shiels was thought of as the Status Quo opener. It's just too funny.

I wish there was more footage of the shows available. I remember Paul Brady giving an absolute belter of a performance of Hard Station but haven't been able to find any recording of it.

Why were the likes of the Blades, Mary Black or Feargal Sharkey not on the bill that day? They were all high profile Irish acts back then.

The Blades turned it down, whatever about the rest. I remember Paul Cleary giving a reason why they didn't want to play but forget what it was precisely.

I always liked Brush, though in moderate enough doses was possibly advisable. I remember one of the stories involved Phil accompanying him on his honeymoon. They were definitely close anyway.

Eh no, A Good Heart made the top of the charts about 6 months before Self Aid. Anyway Sharkey was already well known at that stage from his Undertones days.
