Not just David Oliver Joyce's, but TJ Doheny aswell !
I expect Conlan to be too slick for him and use his aggression against him, but how Baluta operates will make it a good fight.

If Conlan has made the weight okay and it doesn't drain him I think Super-Bantamweight will be a good fit for him. He's a bit of a non puncher at Feather, but he might be able to have more of an effect at the lower weight, the extra strength for the weight class could prove helpful too.

The Sunny Edwards fight is an interesting one and a pick em. Mthalane in his prime would have little issue here, but he's 38 now and not fought in 18 months.
It's old for a Flyweight and I wouldn't be surprised at all if Edwards nicks this in a close and controversial points win.

There's a 3rd competitive looking fight on the show (rare for a Frank Warren card) in Troy Williamson Vs Kieron Smith. I've only seen bits of Smith, but I'm not impressed by Williamson at all and thought be lost his last fight. If Smith is up to much he should beat him.

Thought Conlan looked quite weak and drained on the scales yesterday. Bit risky this being his first fight at a lower weight against a come forward puncher type. Hopefully the gas tank holds up ok. Should be too classy for him as long as he hasn't crashed the weight.

Yes, big ask making that weight. He really is big at 122....

His team must feel that 126 and 130 are not where he can do well

I mean, frame wise he is at least 126 lbs material, and more....

Needs to be good on defence, movement and speed....should hammer this lad if he is cute and slick, and able to take or avoid anything heavy.

    Conlan in the ring now..

MC seems to be focusing on a tight defence!

    Conlan needs to start landing!

    Commentators doing Floyd commentary..

Criticising the opponent for missing, but saying nothing about Conlan not throwing..

Conlon running out of ideas here.

I agree with Adam Booth here, Baluta won that round but it did cost him a lot.
Open mouthed and blowing a bit from his efforts.

Conlan needs to keep pressuring him and start throwing more back.

Yes. Physically, Mick superior. Needs to impose and throw..

Conlan not good enough here. Needs to get himself into southpaw and pick this lad off. Making hard work of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,928 ✭✭✭Morrison J

Baluta ran out of gas fairly badly against Doheny. Being made to work a lot here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57,370 ✭✭✭✭walshb

    Conlan quite slow hands!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,342 ✭✭✭Bobby Baccala

Baluta landing nothing of note really either

Baluta swinging at fresh air 80% of the time!!

True, Conlon isn’t very impressive at all!!

Very one sided commentary as usual. It's a bit like the way RTE reports the news, focus and emphasize everything that you agree with, and completely ignore anything that doesn't suit you.

    Really is..

So OTT for the house fighter..

What weight division is Conlan fighting at. He looks a lot heavier than usual I thought? No trademark six pack.

Conlon isn’t impressive in any way, if he wants to compete at world level he’ll need to seriously improve. He is the better fighter class wise but he’s not showing it!

At his lightest ever for pro. 122 lbs

Big shoulders and back. Physically stronger than Baluta

Conlan just lacks that zip/speed/spark in his punching...very labored.

Yeah he looks very sluggish, all that zip seems to be gone out of him. His body language in the corner isn't great, inasmuch as you can read anything in to that.

Not scoring this, but it is close. Baluta has won several rounds and several very tight to score..

Have conlan ahead by 1 but think he is in trouble.

    An Eddie Hearn night out.

    A Frank Warren night out.

    551916.jpg

Frank took advantage of the local wedding band being on hiatus to borrow their lights. That's a real businessman I tell ya.

    :-)

Fulton won’t be at all concerned

MC would need quite an improvement to stand any chance beating Fulton.

Some amount of vaseline on Conlon for the last.

    Ridiculous fitness from Baluta.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57,370 ✭✭✭✭walshb

MC spent 5-6 rounds walking Baluta down but not hitting or hurting him..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,834 ✭✭✭OOnegative

    Conlon by slimmest of margins!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,928 ✭✭✭Morrison J

Conlan close but clear for me. Few improvements in there for sure but a mixed bag overall. Fulton won't be too concerned watching that.

Conlan seemed to think his natural ability would see him win the fight. Could, and should, have done a lot more. Was expecting that Baluta would be worn down by the body shots and when he wasn't...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,004 ✭✭✭Big Ears

    Ridiculous fitness from Baluta.

After about 5 rounds of swinging with everything he had, all he had to do to keep going at a high pace was take a little bit of heat off his shots and he was able to windmill away for the last 7.

Very impressive stuff considering he was getting hit to the body quite a bit aswell !

Thoroughly, thoroughly, unimpressive from Conlan there.

Baluta has an engine and plenty of output, but he was wide open to be hit with counters coming in. Conlan really should be beating European level guys like him with ease if he is serious about being a world level contender.

Conlan pushed him over at least 5 times too, should absolutely have had a point deducted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 87 ✭✭PunkIPA

    Baluta was mugged there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,342 ✭✭✭Bobby Baccala

Probably should have been a draw tbh. Mick got away with one there.

Think the draw was the way I scored it. The 117-112 was nuts. Lucky win for him. Or am I crazy. Commentary was laughable.

    Far from clear..

No issue at all had Baluta got that

    Very unimpressive from Mick..

Needs to bin the posing and threatening and go to work far more..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 87 ✭✭PunkIPA

He really wasn't. Serious engine though.

I had it a draw but think Conlan should have been deducted a point for the continuous pushing. 117-112 is an absolute mugging.

If you were only listening to the commentary, Mick won by a mile!!!

    Farcical.

Seeing Joe Joyce as an analyst is like watching parts of the King's speech !

I feel bad for him tbh, he seems a nice guy and is just so uncomfortable speaking in front of a camera.

Funny enough Richie and Rawlings were very biased in favour of Conlan.
Yet Richie's scorecard after 10 was 96-94 Conlan, and Richie gave Baluta the 11th. Not sure what he said about the 12th, but despite his commentary that's at worst either 115-113 Conlan or a draw on his scorecard.

Yes. Was thinking the same. Spent 90 percent commentary in MCs favor, yet had his card on a knife edge with a round or two to go

Surely got to deduct a point for that punch that was about two minutes after the bell?

Edwards 4/9 right now on Paddy Power.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,928 ✭✭✭Morrison J

Edwards putting on a clinic. Great performance if he can manage the gas tank and see this out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,625 ✭✭✭✭Johner

Missed the Conlan fight but not at all surprised he struggled. Has shown nothing to suggest he will be near world level in the pro’s and I can’t see that changing.

Really good performance so far by Edwards, have him 9-2 up going into the last.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,625 ✭✭✭✭Johner

One judge 120-108 a shutout and another 115-113. Lol!
